Nice birthday present!

Recommended Posts

Thanks guys, definately one of the best birthday "presents" I've gotten! Now I just gotta wait until they actually issue the license so I can go flying! They told me 3.5 working days, that was 5 working days ago and they're still processing! <_ gotta love the government bureaucracies>

They didn't give you a temp? I got one that was good for 120 days when I passed mine.

Unfortunately they don't give you a temporary license here in Hong Kong.

Anyhow, on a slightly related subject, does anyone know what the process is for converting an ICAO PPL(H) to FAA PPL?

Also, since there isn't enough room in Hong Kong to do any cross country training, the license they're issuing me is restricted. The only way I can get rid of the restriction is to go somewhere like the US, Australia, or Malaysia for example, and do the cross country training.

Not enough room? China was a fairly large country the last time I looked. Are you not allowed to fly outside of Hong Kong? Why the restriction?

How many hours did it take to get a PPL in Hong Kong? What aircraft did you do your training in?

I think I had 42 hours in the R22 when I took my check ride (Civil Aviation Dept has my logbook for processing). I also had about 4.5 hours in a Schweizer from when I went back to the US last December. It didn't count towards my license but was interesting to try a different helicopter type.

You're correct, we're not allowed to fly into China. Can't even drive a car or motorcycle in without special licenses and permission which are very hard and expensive to get. There's still a border control where you need a visa and passport to go between China and Hong Kong.

Wow, I never realized there was that much restriction.

what do you expect from a communist country, president/emperior/dictator Hu, what he wants to call himself, this country needs a total make over government wise. why would you train there?

Not sure how to reply to that but having spent 6 years in Sweden, 20 years in the US and almost 6 years in Hong Kong I have been exposed to quite a few different cultures and political views.

I've been fortunate enough to travel to many places in this region of the world such as China, Vietnam, Cambodia, Kazakhstan, Thailand, Indonesia, Philipinnes, etc., and as far as I'm concerned, I try to keep an open mind and minimize any racial or political bias that I'm exposed to. Being an engineer by trade makes it very hard to rationalize political propaganda or stereotypes. Give me facts and figures please!

One thing that is immediatley apparent after leaving the US is how negatively the rest of the world views America and Americans. It's something that I have a very hard time with personally.

Anyhow, to answer your question 67november, the reason I trained here is because this is where I'm working at the moment and I totally fell in love with helicopter flying! It is completely addictive!

If you want to get into a political discussions / arguments, I'm definately not the man!

On a lighter note, I picked up my PPL(H) license today so it's official, there's another heli pilot out there! :D

Cheers,

Martin
