ERAUice6
Hello, I am currently a Junior at Embry-Riddle and i am in the Army ROTC program there. I currently hold my commerical airplane pilots license and i am working on my CFI as well for airplanes. I am going to be doing the SMP progam with the Army National Guard unit in Jacksonville, Fl, (1-111th AV) and i have some questions regarding what some of their pilots or any other army national guard pilots in the nation do as a civilian job alongside their ranks as an officer in the Army national guard. I am wondering if it is possible to use your helicopter ratings you have earned through the army and apply them to some civilian flying job or if any helicopter pilots for the national guard are airline pilots as well? If anyone could help me on this by explaining maybe what they do as a civilian flying job as well, that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. Guest rookie101
I am wondering if it is possible to use your helicopter ratings you have earned through the army and apply them to some civilian flying job hmmm, I don't know if I am reading this question right, but are you talking about conversions i.e. you fly a chinook for the army you can fly a chinook for Columbia Helicopters. If so, here is a conversation from military to civilian.http://helicopterforum.verticalreference.com/helicopterfor...&hl=conversionsHope this might be something your looking for, if it isn't well then I hope someone else posts rookie

AndrewT
Thanks for the help, but my questions was about what army national guard helicopter pilots do as their civilian job, because guard is only part time. But thanks for your help. Its more part-time than you think, figure being with your unit at least once a week. You're contracted via SMP or just with ROTC at this point? Either way, talk to your cadre recruiter to put you in touch with the unit that you want to join (if you're not in it already) direct all your questions to that specific unit. I've heard of airline pilot(s) working in the Air Guard

ERAUice6, Are you asking about ratings? The Army has a program for you to get your FAA Commercial and think IFR too, after you complete the Army course. Hawk Driver
As far as what kinda jobs we have when we are not flying for the guard, it all depends. We have some guys that fly EMS and some that fly down at the GOM. Some guys dont fly in the civilian world at all. Some of our pilots are police officers, school teachers and insurance agents. It all depends on what you want to do. I am currently deployed with the 1-111th (Medevac) even though I'm not from Florida, I know a lot of the Jacksonville pilots and they have basically the same mix of civilian jobs as the guys I fly with in my unit in Arkansas. Hope this helps.

Hope this helps. Concur with Hawk Driver. I was deployed with the Idaho Guard and we linked up with the New York Guard prior to arriving in Bosnia. The different number of civilian careers that the pilots had were too numerous to list. Quite a few worked in public safety (cops, firefighters, etc) while others owned their own businesses. A couple of the guys worked as civilian pilots outside the guard. We (The Idaho Army National Guard) get a bunch of inquiries from Active Duty and other Guard members as to the number of full time flying National Guard jobs here in Idaho. These jobs (full time instructor pilots, training officers, etc) are few and far between. Most members supplement their civilian income with their National Guard Income. However, once you've been around for awile, you can't beat the pay for a part time gig. Good Luck.
ascott20
Nice, so we got an another ERAU guy on this site:) (I'm class of '04) Actually man, you have a great unit up in Jacksonville (1-11th) With a lot of guys who fly on both sides of the fence. There's several ERAU grads there (a couple of 05 06ers) that can give you some info. If you need some more info, PM me and I'll get you some contacts up there. Good luck. FLHooker
ERAU, when did you start the ROTC at riddle and drilling with the 111th? I graduated from ERAU Daytona in Dec 05 and am in Flight School right now for the 111th. I went WO though. As far as ratings go, they have it set up here at Ft Rucker, so that you can take your commercial (H) test right after your instrument ride. However, if you already have the commercial test done, all you have to do is submit the paperwork after you get your wings, and you will get the comm/instru (H) ratings added onto your ticket. For jobs, there are few to be had for helicopter pilots straight out of flight school due to our low hours (typically less than 200) coming out of Rucker. I have been searching around, and really you need hours first. Again, that's only on the helicopter side of things. I, personally, am looking into going back to Daytona and catching up on my FW ratings and getting my FW CFI and teaching that for a while until we deploy.
