From the ALEA database:

Minimum 3 years as a sworn officer and you need a commercial rating with Class 2 medical. Those are the minimums just to get your application in. I would guess as always the more experience the better your chances.

Being a Dept of over 40,000 officers, that is a dept with NO shortage of pilots thats for sure. One of their guys came out to our unit last year. I guess several hundred people put in for one slot when he got in. Id say the best way to get in contact would be to call NYPD and ask for their Recruiting or Public Relations Depts.

Hey all

A newbie here to the Forum

BUT I am a member of the NYPD aviation who is a line pilit.

The minimum time on the job to be transferred is 5 years.

The minimum pilot qualification is commercial rating in either helicopter or airplane.

Upon attaining your comercioal rotorcraft if you are only an airplane you get further training in police operations. Factory training and Dunlker training occure during the flight training phase.

After then you get the "PD checkout" where you take everything you should have learned and apply it in a check flight with ground oral over the course of 2 or more days and eventually get an increase in your salary. It varies with rank.

Hope this helps

Fly safe. ;)

I remember the 1st time I pulled up to the airport and the guy was just flyin sideways down the runway in a NYPD helicopter.

I believe most departments require you to be a sworn officer and have served for a few years before they consider you eligible for a pilots position. I've heard there are some that will hire you as a "civilian", but the majority I've heard of require you to be a sworn officer. At least that's what I've heard and read the most. Here's a great post about Law Enforcement Aviation. This will give you a great insight on this profession.

is it possible to apply for a PD pilot position as a civilian or is it required to be in the force already?

I'm pretty sure they require you to be able to read... :)

Came across this pic. Looks like a sweet ride to provide some airborne law enforcement in. ;)

Me and my K9 partner got a lift in this NYSP 430 a few years back. Both guys pictured are class acts and very good pilots. This ship, along with a 407 is based at SWF. NYSP has a fleet most other law emforcement agencies can only dream about.

Hi all,

I used to fly out of SWF for that cheating flight school, and the NY State Police had 2 units located there. A 407 as well as a 430. The pilots were really cool and the Chief let me know what you needed to do to fly for them. They have roughly 40 pilot positions around the state with 10 of them being civilian. You have to know someone to even get considered for a position as there are so many people applying for them. I don't know what the requirement are for NYPD.

Good Luck, Carl

The 430 in the pic is based out of SWF. I believe most of the civilian jobs were scapped up by NYSENCON pilots a few years back when SP aviation absorbed ENCON's aviation unit. Definitely a great job if you can get it.
