  1. Hey everyone, Rotorway's 162F Exec. seems to be one of the better ones out there (as far as homebuilts are concerned), but they even have their share of problems. As RD pointed out, you'll find an abundance of info on their forum site. There are some pretty talented engineers who purchase and build them for people who devise all kinds of monitoring systems for various parts......for example, the secondary drive system that Rotorway uses is said to require temperature sending units on their bearings. If the bearings heat up too much, they will fail, and you'll lose the main rotor. These engineers also have created a multi-function display for the various parameters....i.e., a low-rotor rpm horn system, an overspeed horn, etc....kinda cool, if I can find the pictures of them, I'll post the link. Another problem with the secondary drive system stemmed from a belt conversion you can purchase. if memory serves, the Pro-Cog belt conversion has a higher failure rate than the stock chain drive system. Something to think about. And yet another issue I had with them is the single V-belt system used to drive the tail rotor.....actually, there are two belts, one that stretches from the secondary drive and goes halfway down the tailboom to a pulley, then another one from that pulley to the tail rotor pulley. Granted the belts are made of some really good material (aramid fiber), but there is no redundancy if one of the two belts fails.........and a failure in either one will cause you to lose tail rotor authority. Anyway, I was looking into them at one point as well, but opted not to get one. There was just too many occurances of mechanical failure to really be comfortable with them. The concenses that I got was that at some point while flying one, you'll definitely use your emergency procedures to save your life....period. Not good enough for my money.   3. Hello everyone, I'm going to be in the market to purchase an Enstrom 280, and I'm trying to get an idea as to what I can expect to pay to my maintenance fund. I plan on making the "deposits" per flight hour and wanted it to be able to cover EVERYTHING involving maintenance (with the exception of completely destroying the bird....I already know how much that would cost). I do plan on putting extra away for the "non-planned maintenance" as well, but I wanted to see how much other owners/operators pay to keep them running w/o sucking additional $ out of my checking account to do it. I'm going to be sinking a ton of money into this plan and want to make sure I've got enough to cover the "down the road" costs of ownership. Does anyone have any info on this topic? Maybe even a clever formula that someone has come up with to cover these costs (like, planning on "1% of your purchase price annually" is one I've heard of......but I have no clue if it's accurate or not).   4. We are looking for one or two partners (total of 4 people involved) to purchase a later model Bell 47G2 helicopter (or an Enstrom F280) by late summer of 2005. Not etched in stone either way, although I am leaning more towards the 47, but it will be dependent on partnership interest. We are located in the San Francisco Bay Area (South Bay) in California, and would like to keep the bird close by. It would also be nice to piggy-back with someone who has a hanger at some point, but we'll cross that bridge when we get there. The bird (if a 47) will have just come out of a thorough "1200hr. Inspection" and will have a new engine, new paint, a fresh interior, and some new instrumentation. If we go the Enstrom route, we will be looking to purchase a recently overhauled bird as well. We would like maintenance to be a non-issue for a while. The total cost of the aircraft will be between $100,000 - $130,000. However, with this being a fractional ownership agreement, the cost per person will be between $25,000 - $43,000 (depending on the number of partners).
