  1. It is Ken. He flew with us all summer- over 75 drying hours the season before last. Ready for war he is...but cool dude.
  2. I'll tell you right now that if you have to compete for a job with others that have the same hours etc. that you do and you're 39 or 42 and they are under 35, you will lose every time. I've been told over and over how much they llike my attitude & I'd be a great fit but, I never get the job. The 30 year olds do. I'm 48 with more real world flying than a few guys that landed jobs I was trying for, because they say, younger guys/girls pick up on the training faster. I've been at it since 40. Good luck to you. You're gonna need it.
  3. Some of you know him...some of you don't...some of you like him & I know lots don't...but, I knew him & I liked him. I concidered him a friend. Scott Baker was the owner of Versatile Helicopters in Brewster, WA. He was a rough, tuff, load obnoxious man from Canada. He was hard to work for at times but, I learned a whole bunch from him. Scott was one of the very few guys out there that would hire low time pilots to fly his helicopters. S-58 helicopters to dry cherries. Maybe is was a bit odd, maybe it was'nt. On April 1, 2012 I hopped a plane to Brewster, WA - jumped in an 18 wheeler with Scott, drove to the ferry in Van Couver B.C, dropped Scott at his house on Van Couver Island and for the next 6 weeks I hauled load after load of equipment, steel beams & everything else needed to build a huge refrigederated building in the valley 130 miles north of Brewster, WA. 300 miles east of Scott's house, a 2 hr ferry ride & huge mountains with twisting roads the whole way. I also hauled 12 oversize loads from Kamloops, B.C, 200 miles north of the border into the states. I stayed a Scott's house a couple nights a week & felt right at home ( 2800 miles from my home ), his beautiful wife April made me dinner. Easter dinner too with the whole family. Then the 3rd week of May it was to the Helicopter for the next 12 weeks to dry cherries, lots of cherries. I did fight some with Scott, he called me an a-hole at times & I called him more than that ( this was my 2nd season with him & it was a tuff one ), he was hard on people at times but, I would not have experiened any of those things without him. I was mad at Scott when I left last year & didn't go back this past season, I'm an idiot for that. Now I'll never have the chance to make up with him or work with him again. He was injured while unloading the same man lift off of the same trailer that I loaded & unloaded a few times for him. He donated organs to 5 strangers last Monday, then the plug was pulled. He was a very good pilot with thousands of safe flight hours in many different aircraft. I'm saddened by his death. I will & do miss him. Good bye to Scott Baker & thanks for the memories. Everyone who reads my post, take note of what my post say at the bottom. That is my older brothers motto that I inherited.

  5. One more thing, if some of the clowns out there would read a bit s-l-o-w-e-r......then maybe there would be a few less attacks on here. THINK before you speak! That reminds me Dennis, think about your answer about Michigan's U.P.- that way I won't have to forum abuse you. ( I live here )
  6. I picked up a 280 in Salem, OR & flew it to the factory for service, I wondered around that place for 2 1/2 days, I too flew the 480, with Bill, nice ship. After repairs, I flew around Northern Mi a bit then on to Binghamton, NY & dropped the ship off to it's new owner. A few weeks later I went back & flew the 280 around the foot hills North of Binghamton for a few days. I have 80 hrs in the 280 & 800 in the Hughes 269. In fact, the 269 I have all those hours in was talked about a couple years back on this forum, it was for sale & someone said it was a piece of doodoo pulled from the bottom of the lake, it was the best 269/300 I ever flew & I have flown a couple new 300c's. I guess what I'm getting at is this, maybe the Enstrom will be a little cheaper to operate and someday maybe replace the 300c, that's a big MAYBE, but, the Enstrom does not stack up to the all mighty 269!!! Just one more Helicopter Pilot's opinion. ( We all know there's not enough of these ) Happy Trails P.S. Dennis, what did you think of the beautiful little town in the awesome Upper Mi that Enstrom calls home?

  8. Hello Barker I'd like to know how old you are, some people will tell you it doesn't matter but, it does. I know this first hand. Email me if you'd like, I'll tell you how it is, instead of the same old crap. At the risk of causing myself a whole bunch of greef, I'll just say it- if you're not pretty, under 35 years old, or a girl, don't waste your time or money. There are way too many 25 to 35 year old pilots looking for work and that seems to be what chief pilots want. I have more experience than two that I know and they got the jobs, because, this right from the chiefs mouths, "guys over 40 don't pickup on the on the job training as quick". I say Bullshit- and no, I don't have a bad attitude. I never use to anyway. Btw- I have had two part time flying jobs and more to come. Good luck brother.
  9. I'll give you my two cents...since you're asking. I'm working with 3 now, was 5 a few weeks ago ( the other two still have no work ), out of work CFI's. There are a couple hundred others out there with NO WORK !!! When you become a commercial pilot, that doesn't mean you'll become a paid to fly working pilot, but, it also doesn't mean you will not either...it's a very big roll of the dice my friend, think looooooonnnnnggggggg & hard about what you're about to do. BTW, when you do become a commercial pilot, you'll still be broke. No one really wants to tell new wannabe pilots not to go for it, I'm not saying that, but, what I am saying is, there are lots, I say LOTS, of out of work, can't find work, will not get work, can't kill for work ( but would ) broke commercial pilots flipping burgers, washing cars, sweeping hangers, picking their nose, kicking themselves in the a$$, walking around all of North America as you read this !!! If you go for it, you better make dam sure you're smarter and better than a whole lot of other guys out there trying to do the same thing. Good luck, wish you lots of luck, hope you have luck, you better, cause you're gonna need it brother. Oh yea, one more thing, make sure you're fit & trim, mid 20's to mid 30's & good looking.

  11. I dried last year, and, I'm drying this year. It didn't do much for my resume but, get me called crazy a couple times and, added more PIC time. The low, slow, wires, houses, fruit pickers, rain, wind, lots & lots of wind, has made me a better pilot tho. I'm not getting rich, but, I'm flying & we've had lots of rain this season. If you can get a job instructing, take it !!!

  13. It's funny how I just replied minutes ago to the R 66 ferry flight, then I see this. Thats the kind of crap that needs to stop. Just my two cents....thats all I have to my name after discovering helicopters dammit !!!
  14. I had no idea there was such a thing as a " Mountain Experience " endorsement. I've transitioned thru those mountains a couple of times, no one ever conciders " just passing thru " mountain experience. You guys out there should really quit trying to B.S. the young inexperienced pilot wannabees with ferry flight stories. I'm NEVER negative on this forum, but, common now, there's not enough mountain experience, night flight or simulated instrument time there to do anyone any good. What there is thats good is, cross country & turbine time @ a high cost to get your machine where it needs to go. That $7700 is better spent somewhere else in the training phase, than on a cross country. Be fair & charge $150 an hour. Your machine needs to get there no matter what. $4200 cash is fair & better than $0. Ok, let the Copterkeith bashing begin !!!
  15. I applied over a week ago & meet all the requirements. The person that put the ad on line can't even bother to answer the phone or return my call. Just like the last guy that sat in that office.
  16. I don't know anyone that does or has worked for them, but, what I do know is that they have a bunch of peeps that do work there and, how often have you heard about accidents at the company ? They've been around for awhile, have a pretty big fleet of ships, I've seen a few up close and personel, they are obviously doing something right. YOU as a pilot should be able to inspect an aircraft and determine if it is safe to fly. If they'd give me a chance, I'd most certainly give them a chance.
  17. One more thing & I know not everyone will like this comment, but, if you're a pilot and you can't handle flying in controlled airspace, then you shouldn't be flying.
  18. Is it or is it not just plain silly to plan on or do all your training at one type of airport ??? Training requires both types of airspace. Check out the instructors & the equipment, then make your own decision. You'll be spending quite awhile working at the place you get hired (if you get hired), so you want the best equipment(meaning everything to do with the school, not just the heli's), & you want to be comfortable.   19. Hello to everyone. There were 2 ships down in the cherry drying community yesterday. 1 in a field I got called in to cover for, damage to the ship,( and cherries )but the pilot walked away. The other was 30 miles away, I was drying the field on the opposite side of the power lines from the S- 55 that went down. The power lines were on my side with tall trees on his side, the lines came out from behind the trees at the end of his field. It was raining at the time. I left to return to Brewster & a short time later I heard that the 55 clipped the wires. Both ships & pilots are from the company right next to the company I work for here in Brewster, I don't know either pilot, but, I did wave to & see them all the time. Stephen is the young pilot that died yesterday, his 4x4 truck is still in it's parking spot at the hanger, most of the time it has a dirt bike in it. I also seen him numerous times with a girl, girlfriend maybe, don't know for sure. What I do know for sure is this, I feel for that kid, his girl, his family & can't get him outta my mind. I don't know how I'm going to go to that field the next time it rains & have to look at the burned out spot on the ground, knowing that a young pilot I watched fly by a few times this season, is gone, because of the same dam wires I fly next to at the end of my field. To Stephen's family & the pilot's that worked with him next door, I'm sorry for your loss. Stephen W. Nelson rest in piece brother. To the rest of us, WATCH OUT FOR THE WIRES !!!!!!!!!
