  1. Where is the aircraft located? How many hours remaining? What is the "time out" date? Thanks
  2. It was the specific policy of Classic Helicopters during the time that I did my flight training with them years ago. I have also rented from Heicopters NW in the past and it was their policy as well. I am speculating that the old policy regarding rentals is still in place.
  3. They will require a sign off from an instructor granting you privileges. Then you must maintain 14 day recency of flight or you have to start over again.
  4. Ryan, You have asked a great question-"Is it worth it?". I say "Well it depends". My first response would be- "who's paying the bill?". If you are paying out of pocket then the answer firmly would be NO, it isn't worth it to buy 40 hrs in R44. My second reply would be- "what is your weight?". If you have weight on your side (less than 170lbs) then you won't need to buy your competitiveness, however if you weigh more (closer to 200lbs) you'll need a competitive advantage where ever you can get it in order to advance yourself past CFII. Aside from the SFAR regs mentioned above and unknown by most is that if a school insures their aircraft with Pathfinder insurance (a lot do) a pilot can't give instruction in the R44 until they have 500hrs total time. Summary-You are REALLY going to have to dig deep on determining your viability to advance because chances are the extra $ spent will be a waste. It is also extremely painful if you're racking up debt along the way as well. Just a different point to consider. Good luck in your endeavors.

  6. I did it the old fashioned way. Something not taught at home or in school anymore, apparently. 1st, Obtain employment in order to make money. 2nd, Save some money by living on less than you earn. 3rd, Apply the saved money towards the things in life that you want and need. I got my private certificate without any debt. I believe this to be a trustworthy recipe for success. Good Luck!
  7. Most people attend a local school out of convenience. If you are able and willing to relocate for flight training, then my recommendation is to patronize an organization which will provide you the greatest chance of employment upon curriculum completion. This typically will be larger more established organizations that provide commercial helicopter services other than just flight training. I understand that there are no guarantees of employment anywhere, however I can virtually guarantee you that if your school doesn't hire you, others won't either. Good luck!

  9. Find a new instructor! Sounds like the vote is in which includes mine, make a precautionary landing and inspect the aircraft. A real no brainer.
  10. Why don't you go and visit various local flight schools and ask them about a future career given your circumstances and get 1st hand frontline information. Then you can come to your own conclusions. Best Luck.

  12. Thank You UH60L-IP. Bravo for your honesty. Well spoken. Anyone who can't admit this is waste, fraud, and abuse is obviously a beneficiary of it. I personally find this abuse offensive. I personally have paid for 100% of my flight training and feel that others should as well out of pocket. What seems to be getting lost here is the difference between receiving flight training and paying for flight training. I have not heard anyone here remotely suggest that veterans should be excluded from obtaining flight training. That makes no sense to suggest. If a veteran wants to attend flight training go for it. What seems to be the real issue is funding these ventures with other peoples money; the government has no money (examine the national debt and the unfunded liabilities folks)other than what it redistributes from taxpayers. Here's my 2 cents for what it is worth. I don't think that the government should pay more than what a private sector funding source would pay. Let's use an arbitrary number like $100,000 for conversation. This would be the maximum. This could in my opinion take care of "most" waste fraud and abuse of funds. Next I would honor the aggregate amount of money promised to veterans by writing them a check for the total amount if they have fulfilled their end of the bargaining agreement (this keeps people from getting the shaft). Then the veteran can be free to choose where, when, and how they spend their money. They can use it to piss it away flying turbines, they can pursue other schooling interests, they could save it, they could use that money to help them buy a house,etc. I am a believer in choice. Most of the commercially rated homeless vets I have met wish they could have used their benefits for something else. I think that the market will sort itself out and the notorious pilot shortage will be no different. Get government out of the way and see what happens. Free markets work folks. Now I certainly understand that everyone has a different viewpoint of essentially the same topic of conversation based upon there experiences, however we should all (civilian or military) be able to agree that the amount of money being spent on flight training (upwards of 1/2 million dollars) according to the article out of the LA Times is a GROSS abuse and an amazing disgrace to all. Shame on those whom participated which includes the VA and Congress as well.
