  1. I didn't know about any of these sites at the time. After doing the math the package I bought would cost me over 10k less then if I had gone hour by hour. I was not anticipating moving three years later. I started training in March of '09, was ready to solo by June, had to wait four months for my medical, during which time I continued some ground training and flying maybe twice a month. Then that fall I was working full time, went back to training in mid Jan doing more ground work to prep for my solo sign off, had a baby in May, was a stay at home dad for 3 months after that and then it wa
  2. Well there aren't a whole lot of helicopter schools in the Northern VA area that I could find and being new to the industry and everything, I bought a career package that included 200hrs R22 time, all the ground training, exam fees and 5 R44 hours after completing my CFI for $54,900. So it was a good deal financially over time and I knew I was going to be in it for the long haul. I had already been training for three years by the time we ended up moving to a different state (so many unforeseeable delays... )
  3. This wasn't embarassing at the time but it was pretty bad in retrospect... I was a flying a slightly mentally disabled guy (late 30's/early 40's) for charity in SoCal back in February. The airport I left from was close to Disneyland and my plan was to surprise him by flying overhead, above the TFR. When we took off from the airport I could easily see the amusement park as I called ATC, announced my intentions and climbed up to 3500 agl. As I circled the amusement park ATC called back and asked me again what I was going to do. I told them again that I was just going to stay where I was
  4. If there are any pilots or future pilots in the Northern Virginia area, I have 107 hours of R22 dual instruction prepaid at American Helicopters in Manassas, VA. My wife's job moved us to CA last year and I've continued my training out here. I'm trying to sell the hours at a discounted rate of $220/hr. That's dual instruction only. Normal rates are $265/hr. If you are training or have thought about starting to fly, let me know if you want some cheap hours. Thanks!
  5. I started out flying in the Robinson's and have over 100 hours in the R22. When my wife and I moved to another state, the school I started training at there had S300's. Even though I like the S300 more (more room, sits higher, more power), there are skills to be learned in both. It's hard flying 100+ hours in a helicopter with a RPM governor and then moving to a ship without one. As some of the others are saying, ship versatility is great to have and you should look for a school that uses ships you have experience in.
