  2. Just got the word from HRC that I'm heading to Belvoir untracked this spring. Anyone there who can give me a heads up on what to expect as a line PI/PC there?
  3. The ability to fog a mirror seems to be the main qualification right now. That applies to everything from getting picked up for WOFT to making CW3.
  4. I'm on the same page as zion. Joined to fly helicopters, but the only way I could see myself continuing in the Army would be in a FW slot (or 160th if I weren't so broken) Sadly HRC doesn't seem interested in negotiating and instead has a "take what we give you or get out" approach to talent management. Their words, not mine.
  5. Go talk to some guard units. Many are short on pilots and even if they won't to a real "street to seat" option, they might send you to WOCS/WOFT before you have time to unpack from Basic and AIT. I was in candidate school in 2012 before the pilot shortage and many NG guys in my class had less than a year back at their units between AIT and being sent to Rucker.

  7. As someone who came from civilian FW (part 135 check hauling at the time, nothing particularly glamorous or lucrative), I would have gone Guard or Reserves if I could do it again. I couldn't find a unit that would let me go street to seat, but in hindsight I should have enlisted in a Guard/Reserve unit and applied for WOFT later. I've had some amazing experiences in Army Aviation, but the opportunity costs just aren't worth it when I could have had most of the same experiences without the downsides of AD by going Guard.

  9. AD you're at the mercy of big Army. I've flown 200 hours in the last four years due to a shitty assignment and a downslip from a PT related injury. Many people on AD fly a lot, but you're always one f-ing over from HRC away from a flight hour drought.
  10. Seriously, I've gone faster in a Mooney at 13 GPH than a Blackhawk pulling the guts out at over 1000 PPH.
  11. I'm sure there are some out there, but I'm yet to meet a single Guard pilot who wishes they were AD. Plenty who want to go the other way though. If I could do it again I would have gone Guard or Reserves. The day to day BS of active duty Army gets to be soul crushing after a while.
  12. Hopefully you can find a unit that will get you a pilot slot right away. When I was looking AD was the only street to seat option. Whatever you do, don't go active duty. There's a reason so many Army RW pilots are getting out and going to the regionals.

  14. The location on your orders doesn't mean much. 2CAB ultimately decides which unit you'll end up in.
  15. If you find out you're coming to Humphreys, you may want to consider a one year tour. The VIP usit isn't as bad, but if you end up in the med you'll spend so much time on duty it will feel like you never see the family.
  16. Yeah, was eying an R32 that popped up at K16. After driving around here for a few days decided I didn't want to drive one while I'm here. Looking into going to Japan for a long weekend and just shipping directly from there to the US. Shipping costs are lower and I won't need to deal with Korea at all.
  17. Currently in Korea on a one-year unaccompanied tour. I'm looking at buying a SOFA registered collector's car with plans to bring it to the US under the 25 year or older exemption. I know I won't be able to ship a vehicle at gov't expense on a one year assignment, but is anyone aware of restrictions on shipping a SOFA car back on my own?
  18. Thanks for the info. I'm PCSing from a line unit so my process will be a bit different than coming out of Rucker, but it's good to know that the Army will pay for both moves. We looked into an accompanied tour, but if I spend two years there the return PCS adso will go beyond my current one (I owe a little over two years at this point).
  19. Just informed that I'll be doing an unaccompanied Korea tour. My wife would prefer to move back home rather than stay at my current station or follow on location using HAAP. My understanding is that we'll pay out of pocket to DITY move her there, then another DITY to our next assignment and the Army will pay us as if we moved from our current location to my next duty station. Has anyone gone through this recently who can provide some input?
  20. What units still have unlimited flying hour budgets? Some of our PIs aren't even getting 200 hours a year on deployments.
  21. Seriously, has anyone pulled off a boat warrant reclass without being a prior 88K?
  22. Trying to do the AODC, and the link to it from the Advanced Course website is broken. Searching for the course on the USACAC website brings up course number 1-250-AODC (DL). It looks like the right course, but the description makes it sound like it's for civilians. Can anyone verify that it's the right one?
  23. I would advise bringing a vehicle. It will make it much easier to run into Enterprise when the shopette runs out of the supplies you need prior to your class picking up. Plus if you end up on holdover for any reason you can practice for SERE by escaping and evading down to the beach.
