  1. Bring it on! If a finger up the a$$ gets me into a helicopter, I'd pay for the privilege. Now, I'm an RN and have stuck my finger up my fair share of a$$ holes so, maybe I have a different perspective on this kind of stuff...always good to know both sides. I just hope the docs take off their college class rings first...

  3. Weeeell, of course that goes without saying. there's boredom in every area. And I'm sure flying jets is a great time. Personally, though I used to have a thing for the A10 (raised in civ air patrol and had alot of exposure to the jets, grew up on shepherd afb and had many a tour through the cockpits of f16s trust me, I'd have given my left nut to get a fighter slot) my first flight in an R22 made me a believer. Helicopters are amazing machines.
  4. Dude....just....no. No. becoming a "fighter pilot" (ie high, fast, LOOOOONG and boring). come on. how many dogfights does ANYONE do these days? and against who? Nobody with a real military fights us in the air. most of the fixed wing segment is UAV or CAP. We have air superiority hands down ALL day, every day. Fighters have become nothing more than America's version of the iron dome. I'm not knocking their mission. I'm saying that rotor pilots have a HELL of alot more fun (I've never done it but, I can't imagine otherwise plus I've heard from a couple of AF flyers that that is the case). That aside, every airframe has its pros and cons. Some guys like to do close air support. Some guys like to pick up and drop off. Some guys like to do heavy lifting. Some guys like to scout. The military will ultimately decide what everyone does anyway. You gotta stop looking at it like "one pilot is better than another just cause of his airframe." Personally, if I EVER get to submit my packet (I stopped holding my breath when I blacked out a couple months ago....sigh), I'd opt for the 60. I just like the mission of that airframe. Big picture, landing in a hot zone and doing air med transport or whatever is GREAT experience for the civ market (I'm not counting on a retirement package). But honestly, I'd take anything because I love flying rotorcraft more than anything else I've had the privilege to fly in. I sure as hell wouldn't want to fly the air taxi on the civ side that is fo sho. That's just my ignorant take on something I know nothing about but, I do know that alot of those "awesome high speed better than everyone else" fighter pilots are driving a computer joystick in a trailer controlling UAVs (and yes, they are pissed about it). So before you start up the "the army is easier so I picked it" BS, think about what you are planning to actually do. You aren't signing up for street cred nor are you ever going to get props for being part of the "club." You have to excel in whatever you get into. And whatever that is, you better pick something you would do for free. If you would fly helis for free, if it is worth that much to you, apply for WOFT. Trust me, from someone who has had more jobs that I hated than I care to admit, but did them because they paid the bills, money and prestige are absolutely irrelevant once you have to care about what you are doing. The most important thing is to do something you love. If you don't absolutely love helicopters, don't apply. If you really want to fly fixed wing, DO NOT APPLY. get your 4 year degree and apply to the AF ROTC. You will regret doing something you didn't actually want to do 10 years down the road. Think about it.
  5. Hello there. Thanks for the good words. My packet might be complicated by my prior service. Its all in personnel records hands now. If only I had a dd214.... DARN YOU ROTC AND YOUR CRAZY WEIRDNESS!! In all honesty, you (and I) as civilians are probably in a better position (relatively of course). Since you aren't committed to the military yet, have no complicating military records, you don't need permission from anyone, don't have to get releases from anyone, you aren't competing with any military members, etc, its a bit of a benefit to start with the civilian WOFT program from what I gather. Of course this assumes your credentials are competitive like any other applicant. However, having few complications is a big benefit. As for the LORs, yep, I've contacted about 6 different WOs and not one of em were willing to go for an interview. I've always let them know I'm willing to travel anywhere but, well, I can't exactly call the sheriff to detain them ya know...although, I haven't really looked into the feasibility of that....hmmmm..... . Tell ya what, I'm really wondering if the LORs make much of a real difference anyway. Honestly, I really feel its a numbers game (nobody really knows unless one is a board member of course). If they need people, you will get in even with your pt score of 200, GED, club foot, missing front incisor, and severe southern drawl. If they don't need people (ie all slots for that class are filled), you won't get a slot regardless of your PhD, your 5 trips into space, your 50 patents for a new world changing pesticide inhaler, or your adorable little puppy dog video on youtube. I am becoming cynical at this point in all honesty. This whole process takes so long, I'm just like, well, whatever, I guess I'll get there someday.... When I had my little "do you really know what you are trying to accomplish here" interview with the commander, she laughed at me when I asked if 2 years was enough time to get the process done since I'm 33 in 2 years "pfft! of course this will get done before then!" she said. HA!! I suggested to my recruiter that they add patience as the 8th Army value. They said they'd look into it. Anyway, good luck to ya. PS: I totally get what you meant by the "limited" comment. I mean, we are "outsiders" as it were so, without an established network, it IS a limiting factor to establishing contact with a WO. Of course, it is always possible to start networking but hey, lets get real ya know? cheers.

  9. Reading this, I couldn't help but say, I can't WAIT to get MY ass kicked by Drill Sgts et al. I get the feeling that, should I get in, it will be the best "bad" experience ever! Sigh.....
  10. USMC, I found that the first section and "shapes" section are weighted less than the knowledge based stuff. I had a terrible first section and ended up with a 75. Like everyone is saying, 62 should be enough to not count against you. 50 and above makes you eligible anyway....I wouldn't worry. I bet its a pass/fail kind of thing anyway... For anyone looking for advices, I'd suggest not thinking through the first section (you might as well just start clicking randomly....just kidding but seriously, you blink and the timer says 00:00) and a systematic method to analyze the hidden figures is useful. you have 1.2 seconds per item to do the first section and then 6 seconds per hidden figure (assuming you are able to complete the entire set). Just knock em out and don't worry bout it. Study the Helicopter flight handbook (FAA-H-8083-21A) general sections, know your miltary helicopter types, and use the SIFT study guide book to help with the other sections (its pretty good but, unless you have a mathematics background of at LEAST college level algebra, you will likely have some difficulty. its hard to develop math skill from a single study guide). Plus if you know some physics and engineering basics, the mechanical section are easier. The SIFT TestSubtest# of itemsTime 1. Simple Drawings (SD)100: 2 minutes 2.   13. I think I get you. PC culture has becoming a blight on society. People just aren't allowed to say anything organic anymore; it always must pass through the "be-nice-act-nice" filter. Its as if the world has gone from "You don't like it? Get a spine" to "You don't like it? I'm so sorry you are offended and I must do something to myself to make myself more appealing to your little easily offended child mind." Eventually everything finds a weak, easily offended, pathetic normal. Its like that standard fake smile everyone wears in the business world. They couldn't give one rat's backside (see what I did there? I DIDN'T say "crap" but "rat's backside!" I was moderating myself to sound more acceptable! It is a kinder more gentler world out there....please kill me now! I need another shot of bleach....) about you but they act like it. I can understand it at work with customers (I guess) since customer service reflects the company and the company wants to appeal to customers. But we as a culture (not only at work) are required, through classical conditioning, to say, think, and reflect the weakest minds in the culture. Its so sick to me. We SHOULD be cultivating a strong culture of powerful people. Not catering to the lowest common denominator. Just one man's opinion. Anyway, I can only HOPE that the Army isn't as bad as the civilian side. I'm not naive to think there are no necessary "suck up" scenarios and office politics, but the civilian side is just ridiculous. Don't mean to drone on here. Just venting the last 10 years of crap (yep, I said crap and I'm very very sorry...bottoms up). Cheers.

  15. Pfft! whatEVER! A guy can dream can't he? I'll take sharp, dull, sideways, eo, oe, ahshucks, or whatever briefings. I'll take it owwwwll. I mean, how bout staff meetings where we brainstorm how we can ensure feelings are forcefully brought up and made an issue as a policy (I mean seriously? we are going to turn hurt feelings into a constant conversation? and make that part of annual performance reviews?! seriously?!!). How bout a policy where you, um, I donno, act like dogone adults....or something....and work out personal crap between yourselves? shrugs. I know...I'm a genius... Oh Oh! Whatever happened to "just get the job done and be satisfied with that?" I'm just sayin.... Can you tell I'm bout ready to set myself on fire and run through a crowded mall?
  16. I just wanted to throw two more cents in this one. I want to thank you for putting this out there. It is good to be aware of every possible road block (even if its just one female out of the army, its still good to have warning.....think of it as a PIREP... ). Keep strong brother. you got a slot at BCT. Your experiences are coming from a success story and they are valued IMO. If anyone can get offended at your comments, they aren't worth your time or consideration (and honestly, like lindey said, I doubt anyone took your comments wrong anyway so, addressing any possible offense is kind of moot). If the hostility you are referring to is the "do most soldiers want aviation" thread....man o man...that guy was getting a lesson in real life. If he can learn a lesson about respect from this forum, he will have more than got his money's worth (get it? its free....get it? snark..). Anyway, i work in healthcare around hypersensitive egos (mostly women) ALL the time. I'm SO sick of the PC BS and victim hood class mentality. People literally sitting around waiting to be offended by something. Apologizing for every offense just feeds their bottomless blackholes. They need apologies to feel that their offense is warranted. Don't feed the monster!! I'm not criticizing you here. I'm giving a different way of thinking about offended people. If someone gets offended by something you do in good faith, just explain yourself and say "I'm sorry you are offended." Can't please everyone ya know... If I get in, I can only hope to escape that victim culture endemic in civilian life (at least some of it....please? pretty please?). It will be so refreshing to be surrounded by, and working with, strong people who are mission first, self/opinion/feelings last.
  17. Unbelievable. She had a problem with you using the word "brotherhood" when talking about entering the US Army? There is so much I want to say about this. Sometimes its better just to hold my tongue. It is really hard to do so right now....Did she want you to say "sisterhood" instead? Does she have a problem with men in general or just the fact that the Army, historically, carries a certain masculinity to it? Did she join the army to be in a female dominated env...AAAAH!! shutting up....I'm suddenly really really depressed right now....glad you got through the board. Congratulations.
  18. I can't help but laugh at this convo. Being a civi on the outside.....hearing soldier pilots complain or frustrate about ANYthing is just....so...I don't know. Weird. I'm scraping my eyeballs out hoping to get passed Bat board. I'm sure it will be different should I get in but, he he, I can't help but be like "Go for fixed wing!!!! PLEASE!! MORE EMPTY SEATS FOR MEEEEEEEE!!!!!" Couldn't resist. I LOVE helicopters and if I get the chance to fly a frickin blackhawk, apache, chinook, anything that spins and floats, I'll be one happy soldier!
  19. In order for something to suck, the gaseous content of a certain enclosed space must be at a lower pressure than it's surrounding space. What this indicates is that all married men live in a vacuum.
  20. If it is any help, I also had a hell of a time with the hover (I'm told its the hardest thing to master), specially in the R22 (don't have exp in other airframes). I finally semi-got it when my new instructor told me how to actually USE the "don't look down! focus WAY out there!!" they kept shouting at me. I'm like "I'M FOCUSING OKAY?!" but for the life of me I couldn't keep the thing straight, level, OR stationary. Turns out I was focusing alright, but I was neglecting my peripheral vision. Your peripheral vision is an objective way to identify if the ship is moving relative to the focus point. It is similiar to using your compass in straight/level flight. You are comparing the position of your compass with the horizon. if the relative position changes, you know something is about to move (losing power, slowing down, whatever) and make a small correction before the move actually happens. In hover you have even more points of reference. So, when you are focusing on a distant point, what you are actually doing is identifying the position of the windshield/compass/dashboard/trim strings, whatever is in your peripheral vision (peripheral vision items--pick two or three that you can easily and automatically detect with your peripheral vision) inside the ship to the point in the distance you are focusing on. To practice. take a paper towel roll and attach it to your face (like a telescope). hold it to your eye and make sure the tube stays stationary on your face (don't let the tube compensate, force your head to move rather than the tube). now go outside and pick a point and start walking sideways. Focus on that point through the tube with your other eye closed (imagine trying to aim a rifle scope at a moving target). Your objective is to keep the point exactly centered in the tube. This excercise can help you visualize what you are trying to accomplish while hovering. Instead of the tube, you are trying to make the focus point exactly centered inside your peripheral vision items (the compass/windshield/trim strings). Also, the further away you focus, the earlier you can detect that your peripheral vision items are moving relative to the focus point and your corrections will be smaller, smoother, and more accurate/precise. Once you know what you are looking for, its just a matter of muscle memory after that. Take one control at a time and eventually you should get it. That's my take on it. Hope this helps. Good luck.
  21. You could call the commander if your recruiter can't help. They should know a good bit about officer applicants. the ocs board and woft board are very similar from what I've read and, I guarantee any commanding officer should know how the OCS board works. he/she should be a good resource.
  22. WTH, I'm feeling comfy tonight. Here's some advice on your process. You have to consider your competition. sh@t, I'm 31, bachelor's degree, great scores all around, PFT of 286, and I'm frickin nervous as He*l. You never know what will happen, the army is downsizing, the big money saving talk is all over the aviation battalions, the competition is of a very high caliber: some guys have hundreds of hours, some guys have personal friendships with the pope's american military neice, some guys have PhDs in astrophysics and were air traffic controllers for 5 years. whatever. its TOUGH out there! (not to mention your apparent attitude but, I won't beat a dead horse). My point is, if this is what you want to do, realize its a tough thing to do. You are young, inexperienced, and have no qualifications. Your SIFT isn't stellar. You have a long way to go to bring your pft up to competitive. So, all that said, look fate in the face, give her the middle finger, and go about your business. If you want it, DO IT KID! You know what to do. You know what steps to take. If you want it, get competitive. just DO it! (sorry Nike). Its that simple. I suggest having a plan B....and C....through F. Basically, WOFT is not a guarantee. So, that being as it is, you will work toward it. Consider it a 5 year plan. Hell, you might make it in first shot. but don't count on it. Sign up for classes for a college degree. You have plenty of time. Get a job, save some money, get rid of debt, and get a degree. Work out every day, retake the ASVAB after you study for it about 50 times, If you want to, enlist, take advantage of the education benefits. build up your resume, get out and try again for WOFT as prior service. You will ( I think) be in the same pool of applicants as civilians at that point, you will have a college degree, and you will be able to talk "military." I think the one thing you really need is a broad perspective. Do NOT count on this first packet submission. Throw your packet in there hoping for the best, expecting the worst. I remember when I got out of my parents house. I didn't know what a checkbook was (still practically don't what with debit cards and mind reading IRS vacuum devices (MRIVDs for short)). I had no clue how the world worked or anything. So, now that my hindsight is 20/20 let me tell you, it is up to you to have a plan B, in case your first plan fails and you need to be working on A and B at the same time. Get your sh*t together, pick a direction, and head that way while continuing to put your packet in whenever you can. You sound a little green (like I was) so, let me give you some advice: You've improved your PT a little. great! Keep going. Don't ask how to improve! You KNOW how to improve! You already did it! Keep doing whatever you did. Expect the first two submissions to be rejections. Make a 3 year plan: Plan A: "I will get 3 classes per semester and a part time job to pay for them since I have no rent to pay. Within three years I will have completed an associates degree in university studies (for example)." Plan B: "I will enlist for 4 years, get my bachelors degree in cloud shape naming I will always get outstanding (or whatever scale they use) on all evals for 4 years. I will then discharge and apply for WOFT if I have not yet earned the privilege." Plan C: "I will win the nobel prize in physics for my discovery of the Higgs antiparticle in my backyard atom smasher." --if plan C doesn't work Plan D: "I will enlist. I will pick a job that interests me and reup every chance I get until they tell me to leave. I will continue to apply to WOFT. I will save all the money I can and find someway to grow it since social security is going bankrupt. Plan E....You get the picture. Get a plan together, take steps every day toward it, and don't look back. Have 3 plans. Have 12 plans! plan plan plan contingency plan. As an almost middle ager, let me suggest you read everything you can about how life works. Read up on the financial system, how debt works (DO NOT EVER GET A CREDIT CARD OR ANY CREDIT WITH MORE THAN A 10% INTEREST RATE!!!!!!!!!!), how valuable each college degree is (in my case, nursing is pretty darn profitable: cheap up front with good earning potential. College is the following equation: if X is greater than Y, the result is NO. X= cost of your after graduation student loans. y= sum of reasonable monthly payments (no more than 20% or your monthly salary) for 24 months. Point is, if you can't pay your student loans off with the earning potential of the degree within 2 years, get a different degree. If you can pay for it out of pocket, go for it. Do your own research. Every college wants your money. That is why they are there. They will lie to you to get your loans (oh yes!! you need a degree in women's sociology and the feelings of the glass ceiling's perspective cause employers just LOVE a man that can empathize and think outside the box!!). No they do not. They want someone who is qualified and legally able to do a job which will be worth the money they pay you. Anyway, the college wants your money, you want the college's diploma. Both sides are selfish. Just realize, if you have an accredited degree it is worth the money. if the college is unaccredited, it is WORTHLESS. learn auto mechanics so you can fix your own car, learn basic plumbing. Boost your practical skills; all while becoming competitive for the privilege of flying helicopters for the Army. Save all the money you can get your grubby little hands on!! I wish to god someone had told me how important money was when I was in my early 20s. Most importantly, never ever ever give money to someone for promises. Get that sh*t in writing before you hand any money over (if it sounds too good to be true, it IS too good to be true. No you can't make money on real estate with someone else's money...I...promise...yeah...). Just read everything you can and learn about how the world works. Ask a question and find the answer. Stay curious. Never stop learning. You got a long way to go. Be patient, realistic, and persistent. You are your own cheerleader, coach, and towel boy. No one will tell you to get out of bed to do PT. That is up to you. Its all up to you. Now, get motivated, look up a community college, and register for Fall classes TONIGHT! Tomorrow morning, RUN, PUSH AND SIT! Best of luck to you.

You say you don't like the responses you get, yet you continue inciting them every time you log on, You say you want help or advice then you act flippant, hostile, or passive aggressive when people give you good faith advice. Then you complain when people have a problem with your bad behavior: "Thanks hon..." ring any bells? Then when people think you are fake, you insist in apologetic or self defeating language that you are indeed real. Either you are: 1. real and retarded, 2. a troll and are happily loving the attention you are getting, or 3. suffer from a very poor upbringing and have an inability to make use of common decency and standard respectful behaviors. I'd put my money on 1 or 2. So, if it is number 3, I'm sorry for you but, you need to get your act together. Treat these officers and service people with the respect they deserve (I am a civilian so, you can crap all over me if you want however, I work in a hospital; crap doesn't bother me), But when you are potentially addressing officers, or any military member as a potential recruit, I suggest you treat them as your superiors, no matter what they say to you. You WILL act respectfully if you EVER plan on a military career, especially in a small universe like aviation; they WILL find you. It will serve you well to act like a professional no matter what you end up doing. In any case, I think you're a troll. Try proving me wrong. I dare you. I suggest you go back and read your posts since you act like you have no clue why you are getting beat up. Cheers.
  24. But he was instructed to file for a waiver right? I'm being told not to even try to contact MEPS. I can understand the army not wanting liability however, shouldn't there be regulation or guidance so that there are standards to determine what acceptable and not acceptable is? I'm being told this one interview is a one time shot and that's it for all eternity, there's no regulation guiding the process, and there's absolutely no recourse afterwards. It doesn't sound right to me.
