  3. I got a chance to fly in/fly a CBP A Star last week. One of the best times I have had in a helo in a long time. Very impressed with CBP's facilities and people at the base I was at. I retire soon, but there is a bug in the back of my head to put in for the helo slots. My 2 cents...
  4. I agree... don't join any service just for the hours. All services have their pros and cons, so do your research. I will be happy to share my experiences as a Navy and Coast Guard helo pilot. I can tell you that we do fly a lot in the Coast Guard. I just looked at my log book. In my 9 years as a Navy pilot, and 10 years as a Coastie, I have been averaging about 260 hrs per year. Some years more, some less. But, staying in the cockpit now seems like an anomaly, and I am a bit of a dinosaur among youngins'.
  5. I have found that calling the places that you might want to work at, and speaking helicopter (as well as general things about life) has helped my networking. Everyone has been very helpful and friendly (minus a few strictly HR folks... although some have been more than fantastic). I am retiring from the military soon, and a good attitude seems to go a long way. There are people out there that are willing to talk and help.   8. Oh I knew they HAD... I spoke to him. Sounds like a long cycle between hires for these organizations. Your post said that they were looking... implying (at least to me) that they were actively shopping.
  9. Depends on what you want... lots of Air Methods and AMRG jobs open... just depends what you are looking for. I retire next year and there seems lots of spots open.

  12. From a Dolphin pilot perspective, sometimes we use bubbles or floating crap in the water to keep a reference. A bit different then when we used to hover at 70 feet in the 60 and H-3.

  14. I flew the H-3 for the Navy for a tour. I loved it. Big, heavy, but simple and forgiving. I have flow the H-60, the H-65, and the B-206. Loved them all for different reasons, but would take the King (with new avionics) over any... my 2 cents.
