Fixed-wing ATP and commercial rotorhead, last flying in the FLL area for a company with some gummint contracts. Presently living under a bridge.
  1. As another retired cop, it's these statements that scare me:
  2. I think those are few and far between, but they do happen. FP&L in the PBI area has been advertising for a dual-rated pilot recently. Usually the rotorwing time required is fairly high, in my experience.
  3. This is from EOS Partners website: EOS Partners needs a new partner ... one who investigates a little better. Never mind the laughable claims about the safety record. http://www.eospartners.com/privateequity/ssh.html
  4. That's really a bit short-sighted, don't you think? If you have any sympathy for SSH students who got crushed in this collapse, it should extend to the CFI's who were a product of the same mill. What can they do? They have the same back-breaking loans to repay, and they can't very well stand at the door warning away the very income that they so desperately need to survive. I think to a large extent they were all victims of the same scheme. I'm sorry for anyone who suddenly has no job, no prospects, and a huge unforgiving loan to repay, through no real fault of their own.
  5. The doors are shut and locked at FXE, and the rumor is that SSH here just took on 16 new students. One has to wonder if those 16 paid in advance, and if so, how sad is that?
  6. I've had exactly the same experience as above, only in the Miami Bravo. The controller, who is naturally busy, gives a vector which will take me into the Class B. I have to ask for the clearance, because until I hear those magic words, I am NOT cleared. Vectors DO NOT provide a Class B clearance, and if you're not on an IFR flight plan, you had better refuse the vector until you have the clearance. And yes, I've heard some irritation in the response, but it's my ticket, and I'm not giving it up just for the sake of not irritating a controller.
  7. So it appears AOPA does have access to non-owned rotorcraft liability insurance, but someone will have to call and get the particulars.
  8. Based upon a recommendation posted on this board, I took a ride with Leading Edge Rotorcraft at Boulder City last month when I was in Vegas for the week. I called the week before to reserve some time in their R44, and I just wanted to report here that it's a good outfit. I flew for about two hours with Bengie (Benji?) who is pretty knowledgeable about the area and fairly laid back as well. Short of an outright rental, which I think is non-existent, I highly recommend these guys to anybody who will have some time while in the area. It's easy to get to, and the price was very reasonable. http://www.leadingedgerotorcraft.com/training.php Oh yeah ... if you get there early enough, you can watch all the Papillon A-Stars take off. Silver State is there as well.
  9. The new and improved MS Flight Sim version X has been announced. Looks like it's been equipped with a seriously improved rotor fleet. I want one. Somebody tell me what "2006 holiday season" means. http://www.simhq.com/_air5/air_174a.html
  10. Thanks! Just ordered that one.
  11. For what it's worth, you're replying to a post that is over 20 months old. The operation, if it occurred, started in April of 2003, so taking issue with it now is more or less academic. Also, "Bud" is not Heli-Ops ... it would appear that Neville posted that message on Bud's behalf.
  12. And that's precisely the way it should be. Moderators necessarily wear two hats. When wearing their moderator hat, they should be as much in the background as possible, especially on a well-behaved site such as this one.
  13. Different viewpoints are welcome in the forums .. always have been. What is not welcome is personal attacks on others for their beliefs or any other reason. I don't think it can be said any better than Heli-Ops said it. I also read the post several times and I cannot discern any of the transgressions that have been alleged. If there are any questions about any of this, anyone is free to ask, either here or privately, via the PM feature. That's what we're here for.
