Robert_ Posted July 5, 2008 Posted July 5, 2008 Ditto. Not about the cyclic thing; that I have no idea what you are talking about. How's the heat treating you these days? Your phone is going to ring about now... I think I caught you up on the cyclic over grip when you called. The heat is a buggar though. That reminds me of another thing Mike taught me about converting c degrees to f degrees. It's a simple formula you can do quickly in your head. You take the temp. (for example 30 c), then double it. Now we have 60, then ad 30, (always ad 30 no matter what number you started with). Now we have 90. Take 10% of the original number (30), and subtract from 90, which is 87 f. It's not scientific, but it gets you really close. Quote
JDHelicopterPilot Posted July 5, 2008 Posted July 5, 2008 All in favor of no more airshows.....say I. It's to dangerous and all those crazy pilots are setting a bad example! The comon pilot like me and others can't tell that we shouldn't be doing things like this and may try to do some crazy stuff like this on our own. No more Blue Angels, Thunderbirds or Red Bull helicopter shows period. Quote
Phil77 Posted July 5, 2008 Posted July 5, 2008 (edited) Better than the Blue Angels....hmmm, you are FUNNY!. You must be new. The point at you are missing is that the military demonstration teams have about 60 YEARS of experience of how to train, [...] Does the military train pilots to perform helicopter aerobatics? I'll help you here, NONE AND NO. [...] Hear hear! Before you laugh at others, do your homework:US Army Cobra Demo Team: ...I'm surprised that no cropduster spoke up yet - Dennis' maneuver is IMHO nothing more than a bit extreme ag-turn (hammerhead) gone wrong... maybe he started a little low. (ag-turn example: He only risks his own life! If likes to do it, please go for it!I certainly don't want to badmouth Dennis' - usually outstanding - performance - but hey, look at every drag-racing, nascar, formula 1 or even motocross show - do you think it is NECESSARY do that kind of stuff in cars or motorbikes? no! ...and if somebody crashes doing it, so be it! it was his/her own descision! Lets tell all dragracers to stop doing what they do, so no retard in his pimped up Civic is gonna kill himself trying to re-enact what he saw on speed channel. Maybe skydiving is a better analogy: I don't know if I would jump out of an airplane that is halfway flyable (note: I didn't say "airworthy" ;-) ) but if somebody does it, I don't think even a 10 year old is tempted to jump out of daddy's 152! Get real guys! I can almost hear the outcry! so pls read carefully: I nowhere said: "hey studentpilot: its a cool maneuver, go ahead and try it yourself!" ...rant over, running for cover... JDHelicopterPilot Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 Agreed! BTW: I am going to an airshow in November here at Nellis AFB. Can't wait. Quote
Darren Hughes Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 Finally, JDHelicopterPilot & Phil77 to the rescue!!! Where the hell were you guys, I thought I was all on my own here!!! Quote
JDHelicopterPilot Posted July 6, 2008 Posted July 6, 2008 Yeah, Darren sorry for the delayed reaction. I can't believe we are bashing airshows in general or pilots that perform in them who may not have been military trained. Now, if this had been someone who didn't perform at airshows, was just say a private pilot playing around then yes I would say then the fly is unsafe. Let's face it guys. There is a lot of flying out there like what Dennis puts out in airshows. Look at the air races, Red Bull helicopter, Thunderbirds, Blue Angels an many other civilian demo teams. Those guys know full well what they are doing at those shows. A lot of safety percautions are taken but sometimes things happen. They happen even to the best of show pilots. Dennis took a lot of precautions. He made a mistake and didn't follow is rule that he put forth to deal with the high DA. He admitted that mistake and has my admiration as a pilot and honest person. AngelFire_91 Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 Does the military train pilots to perform helicopter aerobatics? ... Modified and experimental class Bo105s can do this, usually flown by highly trained pilots from the German armed forces. Dude you just answered your own question!!!!!!!!! That's all I'm going to say on this topic, I promise. Quote
FauxZ Posted July 7, 2008 Posted July 7, 2008 The British also have a display team of Lynx helicopters. I always find it odd that people will promote airplane aerobatics as "learning valuable aircraft control techniques under controlled circumstances" and in the same breath denounce anyone flying anything more than a 180 auto as a "hot dog" in helicopters. Any aircraft is far more capable than we give it credit for as long as it's flown correctly. Airplane pilots are trained for this, sadly there is no equivalent training out there for helicopter pilots. This leads many people to try to "figure it out." Some have the knowledge and methodical approach to do it correctly, sadly others are not so lucky. Either way, they are all listed as hot dogs. In the end, it just comes to the age old debate of "if we don't show them, they'll never try it." Don't tell teenagers about sex; don't admit drugs exist; don't show people the performance envelope of helicopters. If we keep everyone in the dark, they'll be safer!! Quote

Darren Hughes Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 Amen to that. Well said. Right there with you, big guys! Quote
mountainchopper Posted July 8, 2008 Posted July 8, 2008 pretty sure this guy's, or gal's, CO might have some harsh words if this was done with out prior authorization and training. Not saying that isn't the case, but at least you guys can now argue about how horrible it is that tax dollars are at risk here instead of private funds which we should all care less about. I was trying to stay out of this discussion but I figured out how to post pictures today so... Quote
