GoldySo far I've heard 2 DOA + 1 DER. Rumor has a fourth as a survivor, but that could have initially been the DER. Quote
Hedge36 Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 Nope. Body count of three. Man, I hate that airport sometimes. KTLA Report Quote
JDHelicopterPilot Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 It's sad to hear about this. I thought at first it was a helicopter but see now it was an airplane. Prayers to the families. Quote
Goldy Posted October 21, 2008 Author Posted October 21, 2008 (edited) It's sad to hear about this. I thought at first it was a helicopter but see now it was an airplane. Prayers to the families. Yepp, it was confirmed as a F/W..initial reports thought it might have been a copter. Don't know what the weather was like 26 miles out, but inland it was 3 miles, but nothing but haze and crap. Small 4 seater F/W aircraft crashed on take off, 3 confirmed fatal and one survivor still in critical condition. Condolences to the families involved. Goldy Edited October 21, 2008 by Goldy Quote
JDHelicopterPilot Posted October 21, 2008 Posted October 21, 2008 Yeah, Catalina airport can be very tricky at times. There have been many accidents there. You can't see the runway ends which is part of the problem. Also the weather is very interesting there. At LGB it might be 1500 overcast and at Catalina because the airport is higher it will be above the overcast. Also sometimes the layer at LGB will be around 2,000 no big deal right? However, at Catalina the airport will then be in the clouds. Sometimes there are breaks in the clouds and you can sneak your way in or out. But there isn't much room for error then. Quote
Goldy Posted October 22, 2008 Author Posted October 22, 2008 Yeah, Catalina airport can be very tricky at times. Yes it can, I guess the military wasnt being too picky when they built it back in the 40's. Anyway, most accidents there occur on landing. This one was on take off...makes me think possibly mechanical or weight/DA issues. Goldy Quote
