thrilsekr
So, there I was minding my own business, when one of my coworkers comes up and starts telling me about this helicopter he saw at the airport yesterday and started to draw me a picture. Pretty interesting ship. I asked if there was a tail rotor. He said not that he saw. Asked if there were two main rotors. He said no. The fin in the back was hinged airboat style. So, I though the guy saw pulling my chain, but one of my drivers came in and she said, "Hey, I saw that thing yesterday flying over the airport." So, the drawing must be somewhat accurate. And he said it is fairly accurate to scale. You tell me. Is it swamp gas?
Dreamin of a Commuter 2B
It looks like what you heard about was a gyroplane, but they do not have skids. Not sure what part of cali you are in but I have a Friend that flys a Gyro down the Cali coast alot. what Airport was it at. Here is a pic of Vances Gyro. thrilsekr
I fly SBP. San Luis Obispo. I did talk to him about gyroplanes while he was drawing it for me. But he seemed to think not.He said that pic is close. Except it "definitely" had skids. It also had an enclosed cockpit. If the engine was in the rear like the one in the pic, it had a cowling over it. And the arms connecting to the rear fin were a lot beefier.I think what he saw was a gyroplane too. I was just hoping to get a confirmation of the actual ship. I guess it may be a homemade experimental. Thanks!

Jeff
It was pretty cool (RAF2000). It could use some hydraulic controls, but that would be more weight and complexity. Do you know of any FAA type-certificated gyros around? I'm not intersted in buying one for now, but I will check out the web link. ~Jeff
Linc
I remember it being said that the FAA has only ever certificated three gyrocopters in other than the experimental category. Hearsay, mind you, only hearsay. I can only find reference for two: McCulloch J-2 - H6WEAir & Space 18A - 1H17

Game over. the RAF-2000 is now being made in South Africa. when I get my Gyro sold I will be buying one of 2 Helicom Commuter helicopters I have located.
