slick1537
Had a question that crossed my mind a while back but I never got an answer for it. Our instrument training ship had a WAAS capable garmin 430 in it. I read somewhere to file G on your flight plan your GPS needed oceanic approach capability, of course I don't think we had those approaches loaded on there cause we are not over the ocean so I filled R for RNAV. Would you had filled G or R?
apiaguy
"G" only for you. I don't know what the oceanic thing is but with any approved (enroute or approach approved) GPS you would file G.. the waas wouldn't make a difference for filing... only your ability to legally fly an approach to particular minimums. The confusion comes because we call GPS approaches GPS/RNAV approaches... RNAV is usually terming LORAN equipment (an old ground based system similar to gps but not as good) RNAV also applies to VOR/DME equipment that you can input vor data into a "computer" and create a waypoint that is not ON the vor station... again, similar to a ground based gps but not nearly as convient. Even if you filed RNAV you wouldn't use "R"..."R" is reserved for: Required Navigational Performance. The aircraft meets the RNP typeprescribed for the route segment(s), route(s) and/or area concerned RNAV equipment would be: /Y LORAN, VOR/DME, or INS with no transponder /C LORAN, VOR/DME, or INS with transponder (No Mode C) /I LORAN, VOR/DME, or INS with transponder (Mode C) GPS systems fall under "Advanced RNAV" /E Flight Management System (FMS) with DME/DME and IRU position updating /F Flight Management System (FMS) with DME/DME position updating /G Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), including GPS or WAAS,with enroute and terminal capability. /R Required Navigational Performance. The aircraft meets the RNP typeprescribed for the route segment(s), route(s) and/or area concerned.
