Hey Everyone! So I got the new iPhone 3GS 16 gig from the wife. Downloaded some free stuff, mostly games, even a helicopter game too. I know there's an S-load of apps, but any suggestions on some for my new toy? I did see one that had the sectional charts, but that was around $40...no thanks!

Thanks in advance!

Pilot Wiz Pro is really nice, has all sorts of flight planning stuff and even handles lateral W&B for helicopters. AeroWeather is also handy and if you're an AOPA member they have an A/FD. X-plane has a helicopter version for the iphone that's kind of fun

Log Ten Pro. Online logbook. Works with the Iphone on it's own but is better if you also have a Mac. With the Mac you can print off all kinds of personalized reports and can be really specific, such as last 90 days PIC on type. Doesn't work with Windows. It's a little pricey but you're pretty much guaranteed never to lose your logbook as it's all backed up by the company.

I have the itouch

I have aeroweather, which I like because it helps determine VFR, MVFR and IFR quickly for me...(color coded) and it gives the basic weather awos kind of style.

I also have the AOPA foreflight with the A/FD etc...

Both, free

FlightPlan

AOPA Airports

AeroWeather

AccuWeather

all are excellent programs and "useful"! FlightPlan is a very comprehensive and well worth the price ($4?) I believe all of the others are free. AOPA airports allows you to display airport diagrams and phone numbers for FBO's etc..

The 2 weather programs are excellent and I use them daily.

Enjoy the greatest tool invented. iPhone 3G!

Cheers

foreflight moble 69$

always up to date sectionals, en route charters, including international AFD weather realtime provided by NOAA and weather underground basically every map available on those sites, always up to date TERPs, approach plates, winds aloft, flight plans, everything you could ever ask for. key in your airport code and it goves you not only the METAR for your airport but all surrounding airports. need a Taf but not at a towered airport, it gives you all the TAF's around and heading and distance from your loacation. N#lookup, moving radar maps. pireps, sigments everything. well worth the one time charge.

How do you all find the iPhone? I'm kinda leary of getting it because it's AT&T. I've never had much luck with them.

AT&T = SUCK

Iphone = Awesome!

Talk to people in your area about how they find the Iphone, cause the AT&T network varies greatly around the country. It might be worth waiting on Verizon to get the Palm Pre which probably won't happen until the end of the year.

For what its worth guys, Im in the UK and just bought my first Iphone. I was really put off as they only use one carrier in the UK (they're called O2).

I bit the bullet and made the switch and can honestly say the Iphone 3GS is one of the best devices I have ever used.

Most large phone carriers run very large and complex systems so nearly all of them will have their own little faults (customer service, pricing levels etc.). If anyone is interested in the Iphone, first thing I would suggest you do would be to check to see how much 3g coverage AT&T were offering you in the area in which you will be using the phone most - that's the only thing in my opinion which will really hamper your use of this device.

If you know anyone who owns one, ask them to let you use it for fifteen minutes (that's what I did with my window cleaner!) - bet it only takes five minutes to get you hooked!

You don't need to get the Iphone for most of these apps. The Ipod Touch works the same it just does not have the cell phone imbedded. I have the touch and use most of these programs regularly. But more often than not I use it for games while waiting in the lounge for passengers :D
