Army Contracts

Recommended Posts

Hello all I have a question that the local recruiter is unable to answer for me. I have been considering joining the army for WOFT but I am not sure the route I want to take. I can apply on the civilian side and try to get a street to seat slot, or I have been considering enlisting as a helicopter mechanic, doing the 30 months I need to get my FAA A&P, then submitting a WOFT packet while on active duty.

My questions is if you are on active duty in an enlisted MOS and you get selected for WOFT, what happens to your contract? Will they make you sign for more years or what? Do you have to finish your contract in the enlisted MOS or do you just get to switch from enlisted to WO?

Once you apply for WOFT and get selected, you will attend WOCS, flight training, and then off to your unit.. So pretty much is a smooth transition. So to answer your question... You will be discharge of your current contract as an enlisted and sworn in as a Warrant officer after WOCS..

Assuming your enlisted MOS was a 6 year contract....

So does that mean you are obligated to 6 years as a WO, or if you only had 3 years left on your original contract you are obligated to the remaining 3 years as a WO?

NO, you are completely out of the contract as an enlisted.GONE..However, If you recieved a bonus for enlisting in the military as an enlisted, that I am not sure if you have to pay back .. Depends how much of the contract you have completed. But once you have completed flight school, your 6 years commitment starts as a warrant officer.. It a 6 year commitment for Aviator AFTER flight school.

Enlisted to WO you sign a new contract for 6 years AFTER completion of flight school. And NO you don't have to pay a bonus back, but if you are entitled to more, they cancel the remaining payments to you.

I never signed a new contract. Raising my hand and repeating the oath, and signing the related paperwork to that action is what incurred my Active Duty Service Obligation (ADSO) and tied it to my IERW/WOBC graduation. As an officer, there are actions that incur an increased ADSO (i.e. getting promoted, changing duty locations, attending certain courses, etc.). You just have to be aware what those actions are.

And they do a good job of not telling you until after you have accepted a course or duty location that you have added 1-2 years on your ADSO :P

If you listen during WOCS, they teach you all that stuff. At least they did back when I went through. Yep, it sure has gotten "better" since then!

I went back in 2002, when everybody did 6 weeks regardless of advanced schools (Oh Lord, I'm that guy now) , I don't remember listening during classes. Only when they played the "motivational movies" lol

Considering most the Army Aviation changes happened in 2005-06 :P I think they did more changes quickly than what they wanted to.

Yes, I get that benefit lol
