New Requirements...

First of all is that it applies to the Part 121 airlines. And it is not a major issue as most of them while not requiring that level of certificate, use it as a weeding out measure. Presently, they only hire low time pilots when they can not find enough with the higher flight times willing to work for the pay they offer. In some ways it will work to the benefit of many of us. It is quite possible it will force pay levels up. I work in both the FW and Helicopter worlds, I have flown with low time copilots in the past. Many of them were quite good. The biggest problems I had were with the pilots that went through the FSI FO program and the guys out of Riddle. They acted like they knew it all and didn't need to listen.

Pilots who have spent some time instructing and flying charter/corporate, build up a bag full of experience and tricks that will keep them out of trouble, that the pilots who go straight into the airlines will never have.

I like how they say, "only a minimum 1500 hrs." :o As it is, its going to take me another two lifetimes just to get to 1000hrs? :(

Why dont they just pass a law that says if you're going to fly a plane into the ice, you should know how to de-ice it and how to fly and land without flaps......somehow I think that would be easier. Now we're going to have 1500 hour ATP's crashing planes, and congress will create a new "Super" ATP rating that will make us all warm and cozy.

Geez, I hate politicians.

Exactly...they already had the training...just a knee jerk feel good law by people with no clue!!

Goldy: You hit the nail on the head my friend. And when they are done with this, we are next! The mishaps in the EMS community will turn the spotlight on all rotary wing operations. All it will take is one politician to be convinced that helicopters are twice as hard as airplanes to fly and watch the commercial requirements double.

Just look at the new requirements for commercial ops under part 91. The frog is already in the pot...

But they are twice as hard to fly as airplanes? I know a few fixed wing pilots I would never let near a rotorcraft.
