Hey guys,

I'm gradually working towards getting all my add on ratings in r/w and I'm trying to decide if i should go to the expo in Houston this year. It looks like it'd be a good time but I'm not quite sure what would be there that would make it worth my time. Any suggestions?

I would have to be in the hospital before I would miss one. And as a new helo pilot I really wouldnt miss it. Plenty of seminars, lots of networking opps, just go.

The biggest advantage of going to HeliExpo is the ability to create a network within the industry. And networking is one the primary ways of getting a job. The seminars are great. The mountain flying, the flying in a wire environment is also good. Plus the CFI renewal course is the only one out there that is helicopter specific. There is a job fair on Sunday afternoon. Great place to make contacts and find out what these employers like to see in an applicant. While there are usually not any flight schools at these job fairs, but there is always a few school show on the exhibit floor. The M&O (maintenance and Operations) meetings will help you stand out in the crowd in the job market. If you do go be sure to attend the opening get together and the banquet. Good opportunities to network.

rick1128 is right, last Heli Expo in Houston, some schools on the floor were HSI, BoatPix, Gulf Coast Helicopters and Anythings Possible Aviation.

Goldy and a few others from VR were there too, just too bad we didn't all meet up. Goldy and I were in the Career Seminar together, but we didn't know it at the time, lol....

The Job Fair was loaded with company recruiters.

GO with a big G and a big O. The contacts alone are worth the cost of the trip if you are not local. You never know who you might meet! In addition, dont miss the HeliSuccess seminar either. It is not often you can be exposed to so much expericence in one place.

Plane tickets purchased and hotel booked. Hope to meet up with some VR members!

Wow- You're even ahead of me! What hotel deal did you get ??

I'll be there for sure, plan on at least one drinking VR event! (not an official VR event of course!)

I booked the Alden Houston Hotel thru Heli Expo. They were fairly close and have a shuttle service so it eliminates renting a car. I'll have to touch base with you later to see which seminars you would recommend. Also look forward to having a cold one with some VR members.

I went to the Board of Directors Reception last Monday night, I'm excited for it to be back in Houston. This year they are planning a Golf tournament the Saturday as well... so bring your clubs. All proceeds go to the scholarship funds.

Okay, I'm reviving this thread because I'm seriously considering going. At the very least, I think it will be fun, even if many of the seminars and things won't really pertain to a student pilot with a whopping four hours of flight time. :D I'm going to try to drag my CFI along, too.

My biggest issue is price. It seems I get the student rate on actual admission, which is awesome, but hotel + airfare...

So what kind of deals did you folks see? I'm looking at airfare now and glanced at the rotor.com hotel rates, but not seeing anything that looks very appealing price-wise. Also, what days are you guys flying in/out?

Let's get a list of who is going! The more that are going, the more I'm inclined to hop aboard. :)

Get on Southwest AL's DING. It is early enough to get some good deals. Houston has some reasonably good public transit, so use a hotel a little further out. I am staying down by Hobby airport where the rates are better. I am planning on coming in on Thursday and leaving on Tuesday or Wednesday.

The helicopter pilot refresher course has a lot of good information for the new helicopter pilot. Also the single pilot CRM course is a good one to look at. If you are flying in area that can be considered mountainous the Mountain fly course is always a good choice.

I will be making the CFI Renewal Course for the 1,000th time. You guys should trap me and torture all of my knowledge out of me! I look forward to meeting everyone there and talking helicopter operations with you.

Networking is key in this business and there IS no better place to do it then HeliExpo.

I’ll be attending the CFI renewal course and ALEA luncheon. Other than that, lots of free time to roam around and see old friends. If you can find me the first two rounds are on me…….

:D
