jeepguy
I'm getting ready to go to flight school. I think, Leading Edge Aviation is where i may go. I've always heard that pilots who can work on thier own aircraft are more valuable. Is it possible to get OJT as a helicopter mechanic, or do you have to go to a formal mechanics school. I would like to be able to hang out in the mecahincs bay and help out if i could on my off time. How likely is this? Thanks.
nikon858
You can be an apprentice in lieu of a formal school, it does take longer though, and it's the same test in the end.
jetblastpropwash
The FAA requires that you apprentice for 36 months if you decide not to go to a formal school, which is usually takes about 18 months. I would apprentice anyway. Regardless of the license, you'll have a deeper understanding of your aircraft.
