Lindsey
Apologies if there is a previous thread on this topic, but I couldn't find it. Anyway, I discovered this incredible documentary on Van Nuys Airport and General Aviation ("The Romance of Flying"), and you can watch it for free at the following link: http://www.hulu.com/watch/118168/one-six-right Wikipedia summary:An independent film about the general aviation industry as seen through a local airport. Within a short period of time, it has achieved a passionate following and presence among pilots and aviation enthusiasts worldwide who see the film as being able to communicate their passion for aviation.[1][2] Concurrently, the film has garnered both local and national political attention in the United States as an accurate depiction of general aviation and its important contributions to all aviation industries worldwide. It is more than worth the time you will spend watching it...I am speechless. It's simply beautiful.
rjl2001
I agree, it's an awesome movie. Definitely a must see for anyone that loves flying. However I do remember thinking it got a little boring in a couple parts. Thanks for posting the free link, I didn't know it was on Hulu. To get the full effect though I think it should be watched on a bigger screen. And someone told me there is another disc One Six Left with some more footage, has anyone seen that? That still is my fav airport. In fact I flew out of there yesterday. Great movie, I know a lot of the pilots interviewed..it was really well done. God bless Barbara and Hal, they both passed a couple years ago. This movie also features two of the most beautiful and talented helo pilots...I'll let you figure out who they are ! Great job finding it on line, hopefully it's a "legal" post. I heard about 16L being some of the extra footage they didnt use in 16R. It came out later, after 16R was such a big hit. The mix of aircraft is fantastic, Phil is since retired and we all miss him! Goldy Edited January 10, 2010 by Goldy
Lindsey
Hulu - the website where it is hosted, is completely legal. There are a few 30 second ads sprinkled throughout the film, but it's not a big deal.
Lindsey
Just ordered a copy of this and also "Straight Up: Helicopters in Action" on Amazon. Gotta watch it on the TV, not my tiny computer screen!
Lindsey
Goldy (or anyone who frequents this airport), are people still allowed to go and sit on the red line with a radio and just watch?

Goldy
Goldy (or anyone who frequents this airport), are people still allowed to go and sit on the red line with a radio and just watch? The airport is a secured area, obviously. But if you know someone or have some reason to get in, yes you can sit and gaze. There is a patch of grass just North of the tower....its about 3 feet away from one of the helo pads. We used to have BBq's right on the grass...bout 6 feet from the red line! Cops drive by every 2 minutes, so keep your certificate with you. Goldy
Karl
On the subject of flying movies I recommend "Birds of Prey". It's a typical 70's TV chase movie but done with helicopters. Full of contour flying. Janseen never seems to need two hands to fly the chopper though.I bought it at Amazon but it's out of stock now.Karl

thrilsekr
Discovery Theatre in HD plays Straight Up occasionally. I have seen it several times. I would buy it, but cannot find an HD version for purchase. After seeing it in HD, SD would not suffice for me. They also had a program (I forget what is was called) that was primarily helicopter footage. Flew around castles, mtns, landscapes and whatnot. Not very much footage of the actual helicopters, but the footage was amazing, and it felt like you were actually flying.
