Maybe someone with more information than myself can answer the question as to why we felt the need to build the JSF?

I mean what can it do that a drone can't do. Unless I am mistaken, at a million dollars per soldier, per year for an Afghanistan deployment we could fund one million soldiers for the trillion dollar cost of the JSF thus far.

Not that it isn't sweet and all.

Yup. Our government wonders why we hold such a huge deficit. :l No problems. Raise taxes, and increase health care premiums to fund the government toy programs.

Heres the short answer:

Russian F-22

While you could argue that the Russians and their customer nations aren't really our enemies anymore I wonder if Russia considered Germany their enemy before they invaded them.

The F-35 is much less expensive than our F-22 and the cost savings of having a common platform accross the services to replace aging legacy aircraft will justify it over time to anyone but the staunchest pacifist.

On the issue of cost, taxes, etc. I say the defense of the nation is one of the few remaining federal activities that IS in the U.S. Constitution. I have no problem paying taxes for weapon systems. I do have a problem paying taxes to accomodate other people's laziness.

Again what can either of these plans do that a drone couldn't.

And fighter superiority doesn't matter in a nuke fight. Where as there are actual American soldiers who's lives could be saved right now with that kind of money.
