permison Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 FYI gang, For those of us who spend a lot of time outside of cell phone coverage and use a Sat phone(you know who you are). Global star is offering a plan for 34.95 unlimited voice, text and data till Sept. You can get the GSP-1600 for $399. Which comes with Phone, Car Kit, Privacy Handset, Data Cable. http://www.globalstarusa.com/en/airtime/voicepricing/ http://www.readysatgo.net/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1_13&products_id=1 I've got no dog in this hunt other than I use my sat phone pretty regularly. I've never seen prices like this! You could probably get a good deal as a group. Quote
adam32 Posted April 22, 2010 Posted April 22, 2010 That is a great deal...gonna have to think that one over! Quote
Rick McWilliams Posted April 23, 2010 Posted April 23, 2010 Does Globlstar work for you? That is an amazing good price. I do not know anyone who has succcess outside of the United States with Globalstar. I have used several types of satphones at sea. Irridium is ok but I have about 50% of the calls dropped data rate is very slow. Inmarsat mini M seems to work but connections may take a few tries. AMSC Tracphone is old technology and reliable, long delay makes talking to mom difficult, data rate 4800 baud, long data connections may drop due to the mast blocking the beam. I pay $60/ month plus $1.19 per minute. Quote

It certainly isn't a cell phone. I've used it during all SAR activities and when sailing of the east coast. Most I think I went off shore was 100 miles. Didn't use it much but when I did I was was able to reach who I needed to. In the states it's been pretty good in the back country. I've never used it for data access just a voice backup. Quote
Karl Posted April 24, 2010 Posted April 24, 2010 I sent that to my brother. He spends a good bit of time out of cell tower range.ThanksKarl Quote
expo Posted April 26, 2010 Posted April 26, 2010 FYI guys the "special deal" is because 80% of there sat's are burned out, so you have to use an online website to calculate when your phone will work (about 20% of the time) so in the event of an emergency or whatever you could wait upto 3 hours to make a single phone call, pretty good deal huh? http://calltimes.globalstarusa.com/ Quote

300Chris Posted April 26, 2010 Posted April 26, 2010 Wow! So much for "unlimited" service. If you goto the main Globalstar website the say they are having some "issues", and coverage may be spotty. If you go to the link for call coverage and put in your location you can see just how bad their problem is. I'm getting 10 -15 minutes of coverage per hour at best. While its cheap I certainly wouldn't want to rely on this service for any important calls right now.-Chris Quote
permison Posted April 26, 2010 Author Posted April 26, 2010 WOW! I guess thats why the low pricing. Quote
