Hey guys, I am new to this site but got some good info from you all through viewing past posts. I was a civilian up until November 18, 2010 when I was sworn in as an Army Reservist, in preparation for shipping to BCT at FLW on 20100118. I started the process in February this year, but have wanted to do it for years prior. I'm pumped to be going, but of course am bummed to leave my wife behind for a spell. I did some homework and found some good info about the process of bringing her along; ie. at what point that would be doable/recommendable and how to go about it. An awesome lady at FSC sent me the following email with a hypothetical situation (that's why the name Nathan is used). Hope it helps!

Here is a Website I found, really good Information...

WOFT - Aviation School

This is the process for requesting to move his family.

While in-processing at the Reception Battalion, Nathan will have an interview. This is where all new recruits are required to name all family members; providing the appropriate documentation, designating beneficiary information and to put in a RFO- Request for Orders to move his family to WOFT/Fort Rucker. While there have him ask when he needs to put in a request to take 10 days permissive temporary duty (PTDY) to move his family, because this needs to be done prior to signing in to HHC/WOFT. I believe his is done while he's in BCT, but have him ask any way. Have him make a copy of his orders to send home so that you can call Fort Rucker on-post housing to be put on their waiting list 334-255-1205 / 334-255-1854. You are authorized to move to Fort Rucker while he is in basic training or of course wait till he is done with BCT. During the 10 day of PTDY he will contact the Fort Benning Transportation Office 706-545-4900 and Fort Rucker Transportation 334-255-9842. Transportation will contact a moving company which in turn will contact you. They will send a representative to your home to view your household furnishings and determine the weight and how many packers will be needed to do the job - they will also tell you what they cannot take (gas tanks for the grill, etc.) At that time, you and the representative will schedule dates for the packers and the truck and begin the packing. They must pack everything that will be moved on the Truck - do not pack anything for them, unless you want to take that with you. They also pack everything, meaning if you don't want it packed - find a cabinet or room, tape it off and put a sign "do not pack" - if you have diaper age kids, make sure the dirty diapers are not in a location where they are packing (sounds crazy, but it has happen). It is also tradition for you to keep them supplied with drinks throughout the day (water, soda) and to buy/make their lunch (remember they are packing your precious things). Your only responsibility is to sit back and watch. Also, while you are at the Transportation Officer you may request to receive advance travel pay for car, lodging and food. to move you to his new installation.

Here are a couple of good sites about WOFT; http://usawocc.army.mil/WOES/wocs.htm

IF YOU ARE BRINGING YOUR FAMILY

Candidates authorized to move their dependents to Fort Rucker must do so PRIOR to their report date for WOCS. It is the individual's responsibility to request 10 days permissive temporary duty (PTDY) for house hunting, from the losing command, and to settle their family prior to signing in to HHC. Once signed in, candidates will NOT be authorized PTDY until completion of WOCS. Candidates who are intra-service transfers will be processed case-by-case due to the limitations and restrictions placed upon them by their losing branch of service. All personnel arriving to Fort Rucker, PTDY for house hunting, are required to first report to the Post Housing Office (located in Bldg 5700) to have their PTDY paperwork stamped. Warrant Officer Candidates are authorized on post quarters, if available.

Hey man, let me give you my .02.

I am a WO1 here at Rucker right now, married with zero kids, one cat :)

I moved my wife here during my 10 days PTDY, did a DITY move, and made a couple thousand in profit. There were guys in my WOCS class that moved their family here to Rucker before they got here, or the family moved while they were here.

If they get a house on post while you are here, you are not getting 10 days of PTDY. Up to you if you want it. While you are here at WOCS, visitation is absolutely forbidden. If they are here, its temptation you may not want.

That being said, have fun at BCT. It will suck, and then WOCS will suck more.

Hah it did suck but it was also some of the most fun I have had in my life. I would do BCT again in a heartbeat.

Anyways, wait until after you get done with WOCS to try and move her down. A lot of guys in my class had their wives down here while they were in WOCS and in my opinion it just made it harder for them.

Once you get done with WOCS you will be free. I took 10 days of leave to go home and chill out then drive down to Rucker. Once I got down here I took another 10 days of permissive TDY to find a house off post. It worked out nicely!

If you are street to seat, which it appears that you are then you wont have to worry because you wont have a choice. Your family will not be allowed to move here until completion of WOCS. Your orders will be to come here to Rucker after BCT without your family. After graduating WOCS your same orders will be amended to move your family and youll have plenty of time to sit around B Co and figure how to do that. And..that usawocc website, everything on it is for prior service.

There were 3 street to seaters in my class that had their wives move here on their own. They did end up in enterprise tho.

So I was selected for the Sept 2010 board and I'm a civilian. I'm trying to figure out when to move my wife and kids. I think the best would be after WOCS and she wants to move before. I start basic Jan 18th,2011 for Ft. Lwood, and I'm getting very excited. Also we moved in with my parents this month to make it easy for my wife and kids and save money. All my things are in storage so when it comes to moving will the army just have the movers go to the storage unit and get everything there. I hear so many differant things I don't know what to think just would like a heads up before I leave.
