Anybody know of public schools that offer a degree program that can be done online? I know of UVU, but thier programs are more specific to planks. (unless I want to go for a 4 year degree) I am thinking more along the lines of an associates degree.

UVU does also offers Associate Degrees. There are both an administrative track as well as a professional pilot track. Not to sound like a mouthpiece,... but I have found the structure and interface of the UVU online program really workable.

I am definitely interested to hear what others have experienced elsewhere. The trick is that they all require a strict commitment, slef discipline, and time management. Also, I recommend to make sure that they will accept Heli certs to meet their requirements.

I am currently going to UVU for the Aviation - Aviation Management bachelor degree. You cannot apply helicopter certs toward any of their classes. They simply don't have them. I am taking a Private Pilot Ground class this semester, the final for the class is the FAA Written Airplane Private test.

The main reason I went this route, is all classes are online, and thus I am able to keep my full-time job while I do school and flight training. That would put me in a lot more debt, something I don't want to do.

Look at everything with the big picture in mind, and go with what looks to work best. I'd call the admissions/advising dept. of colleges with associated flight schools, and see if they have any online program at all that you could take classes through.

Thanks for the replies and advice.

Here is a little more info on my situation. I am still Active Duty and my job really limits my choices and time for classes. I have been planning on going through UVU, and it seems that may still be my option. I just want to be sure I make the best choice and get the best bang for the buck. I have looked at other schools programs, many of which seem to have programs that are tailored to RW students. Problem is they don't have online classes, and many of them are tied exclusively to one flight school. Some schools even have advanced trainig authorized as electives or part of thier degree program. Truth be told I just want my flight training paid for with the GI Bill. I can use other means to pay for the school house classes. Catch is, I of course have to be enrolled in a degree program.

Thanks for any and all advise and suggestions

Gray-Mike,

Thank you for your service to our country. I truly appreciate it.

I’ve enrolled with Thomas Edison State Collage (TESC) on-line degree program. They offer a Bachelor of Science in Applied Science and Technology (BSAST) degree in Aviation Flight Technology which is right up my ally. Plus, they’ll give advanced credit for professional certificates previously earned and military experience as well. And, they have associates degree options as well.

Normally, I don’t recommend aviators seek degrees in aviation specific fields as this doesn’t necessarily help them beyond an aviation career. I’m simply going for it as I’m on the backside of my career and this degree will give me a 7% increase in pay.

Check it out at http://www.tesc.edu/index.php

As far as flight training, I’d suggest keeping the college education separate from the flight education. Seek a professional flight school to gain your certification. If I’m not mistaken, as long as the school is accredited and PART141, your benefits will apply.

Good luck,

Spike
