Auto-Rotation-Nation Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Alright fellow rotor enthusiasts out there, I'm headed over to Alabama in a few days and I'm looking for something helicopter related to do while I am out there , just something fun to do on vacation. I'll be in the area from Athens all the way down past Huntsville. If you know of any bases or just a website I might have overlooked for places out there, please let me know. Quote
RPMN Editor Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 Keep your camera handy, you'll find all kinds of helicopters playing around in that area of Alabama. You may want to take a ride out to Meridianville airport, a few government contractors fly around there. Quote
Tenacious T Posted February 4, 2011 Posted February 4, 2011 We have all kinds of toys but are on the other end of the state unfortunately. Quote
badtransam97 Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 It's not really helicopter related, but the Space and Rocket center in Huntsville is pretty cool, and like RPM said, head out to KMDQ just north of Huntsville, really nice people at the FBO there, and a busy little airport. The DPE who gave me my FW ratings is based there, and he is a awesome man to talk to, done around 9000 checkrides, 30,000+ hrs of flying, his name is Clyde Shelton. Just a few ideas.. Quote
macatstarr Posted February 5, 2011 Posted February 5, 2011 http://alabamahelicopters.weebly.com/ Â if ur willing to drive a couple of hours south. Take a flight around B'ham Quote
Bama269-C Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 If you are looking to rent a helicopter and do some flying you can go to where I finished my training and not to far from Huntsville, AL. In fact, it is about an hour or so south of Huntsville at (3A1)Folsom Field in Vinemont, AL. The helicopter is a Schweizer-300 and is owned by Wallce State Community College. The rental rate is $250 an hour and includes fuel and CFI(Fred Jones)for that price. The Wallace State staff at (3A1) are great and been conducting flight training since the late 1970's. The only other helicopter you can rent in that area is closer to Birmingham, AL in a town called Mt. Olive, AL and it is a Schweizer-300 that is owned by Dick Parker, but it cost $325 an hour; however, it is located on the same property as Rotor Wing Inc. which usually has a nice 407 and MD-500 that is based there and a few other helicopters that come in for maintenance. If you plan on coming further south, I am located in Anniston, AL and there is a nice Bell 206 located at the local airport that can be rented if you wanted to spend that kind of money. If you got any questions or need numbers feel free to contact me and I will help you the best that I can. Quote
rotowing Posted February 6, 2011 Posted February 6, 2011 Don't waste your money at Wallace State, their 300 stays down more than it flys,as far as I know it's down now plus the last time 3 of my friends as well as myself payed enrollment and never got to fly because it was down and they never offered my money back nor to get enrollment at no cost when it was back up.It was down 14 months!!Spent a lot of money with them over the years but never again after they screwed me!!
