Hey everyone,

I've been lurking here for a little while now trying to get more information on the WOFT program and requirements. Everyone has been a wealth of information. I recently had an intro helicopter flight (i have a new appreciation for pilots, ha) and in the same day went to visit a recruiter.

Only one problem. A couple years ago a got a DUI. Long story short, I crashed the car and then I was the one to call the police to report myself. I had read that there are waivers for just about everything and informed the recruiter of the DUI. The recruiter said there would be no way around this, bluntly said not possible. I'm not opposed to straight-forward, bluntly honest information, but then they gave the usual "go enlisted route."

I'm here to find out from people who have more information/first hand experience with the process (the recruiters only had the information from the Army website, which seems to be the norm) if there is a way to get a waiver for this. I know it is a case by case sort of thing so I'm just wondering if it would be possible to get a waiver.

I have searched, maybe not well, but did not come up with anything.

Thanks in advanced for your input and information,

Ryan

Good news: a DUI is definitely waiver-able.

Bad news: getting one from the Army in this current political and economic climate is damn near impossible. Your recruiter wasn't quite lying, but he was treading a certain grey area when he told you flat-out no, because 99.9998% of the time (at this juncture) the answer is going to be a firm no. You'd definitely have a better chance by enlisting and serving with distinction for some years to a.) get your foot in the door and establish your awesomeness and b.) put some more years between you and the incident at the same time.

If you want it bad enough, go for it. Be prepared for a hell of a fight.

While the Army may be able to grant you a moral waiver for the DUI, it's going to be tough to get the interim security clearance for your packet. I've heard of a guy that had to get a letter from his congressman explaining why an applicant should be allowed to get the go-ahead for the security clearance and was fine, so be prepared to go the extra mile to make it happen for yourself.

Best of luck.
