Sorry, I've been a bit bored on VR lately so I thought I would start throwing out some fun....almost worthless, facts on helicopters!

Feel free to post some of your own.

Damn dude, you should prolly take Sky 5 up for a few minutes.

The R44 is a good guess with the 100kts limit, however, the R22 has no such limit, which means it can go all the way to its Vne-102kts.

The B206 is 69kts! Hella slow, but apparently going faster will cause 'cyclic reversal', and 'fuselage buffeting'?

And of course we all know the S300 is a 'dog'. 90kts,...I've never gotten one above 70kts, without hitting 'full throttle'!

Damn,...I need a date!

All Correcto!!! The R22 is the fastest (according to POH) of all the choices!

On the 206 you get cyclic reversal, fuselage buffeting and then if youre pulling over 85% torque and trying to do 90 knots you get mast bending.....great! I'll go back to some good old low G taking off my tail rotor and live with the low energy rotor system!!

Yeah, I took up my lil R22 today (3VH) for a spin around Ventura County and ran into Rick and Susie flying theirs (2DC)...maybe "ran into" is a bad choice of words...but we passed by each other and said hi !

So I got flying out of my system until tomorrow at least....

More stupid facts WILL follow !

According to Tim Tucker at Robinson, the 100 KIAS doors off limitation was only to reduce injury from people sticking their hands out and breaking bones due to the force of the wind. He actually says at the safety course that there is no problem going faster than 100 KIAS with doors off.

Mmm, syntactical ambiguity with the word "can". By published limitation, the R22; by airframe capability, the R44. :P

Hmmm, I guess I inferred that we would fly our aircraft according to published limits which is in accordance with the law....but maybe thats just me!

syntactical ambiguity?? I will remember that one!

Joe- I've heard the same stories from the factory and have no doubt you could fly the thing at 130 knots, but the POH won't let you.

From the Enstrom 480B POH:

"Flight with doors removed. There are no restrictions for flight with the doors removed, however, all loose objects and equipment within the cabin must be properly secured and the cushions for unoccupied seat(s) must be removed or properly strapped down using the lap belts and shoulder harnesses. ..."

Sea level VNE at 2,850 gross is 122 KIAS.

PS: Sideward and rearward flight permitted up to 35 knots, demonstrated at max gross up to 8,000ft. :)

And specifically why I didnt include the 480B on the list of options!!!

How's the flying in one???

Smooth flying, fast, quiet, spacious cabin, a stout construction and very comforting absence of flight restrictions/cautions/fatal-warnings. A very well built American helicopter and a pleasure to fly!

I think she was saying that you have a better chance of getting a R44 to 100kts than a R22 to 101+ kts.

Here's a fun fact:

Congrats to Goldy for over 3,000 posts! Damn, that's a lot of posts. Does anyone besides 67November have anything close?

Yes that is impressive!

Goldy has always some good advice or something interesting to post! He keeps the information flow ...

Appreciate that! *Gonna buy him a beer*

Thanks T :)

The original question must've been geared toward published limitations, eh Goldy? But I don't know anyone who regularly flies their R22 at 100kts....an R44 is gonna start lookin' pretty good :D

TECHNICAL ANSWER: None of them.

Think about it.

QUESTION: Which helicopter can you fly fastest with all doors off?

Ahhh, technically, you are wrong!!

As stated above, the 22 can go all the way to it's VNE with the doors off....

I have more fun facts.....but....I'm still trying to form the questions in a manner that HeliGirl03 won't have a comeback! syntactical ambiguity?? geez..how can I possibly have a come back to that? It's a good thing I have bought her a beer already.....I think it's her turn!!

3000 posts seems like a lot, I haven't paid much attention...but if FlingWing206 were still with us, he would still be number one on the forum. He always preached safety and had a lot of fun with his sense of humor. I had a great time bantering back and forth with him, on and off the forum. I hope people pay attention and learn just a little bit....just like I do when the old timers speak up. We have pilots on this forum with 10,000 plus hours, you just dont hear from them much.....cause they are flying!

Goldy,

It is good to see you flying. You must have not seen the bold snail on the CMA Helipad. Susie got em.

Funny, I did a couple run on landings between pad #1 and pad #2...surprised he survived! BTW, I didnt leave cause you guys were enroute, I needed to end the flight (it still takes fuel to run an engine, right?) and was just waiting for a break in the radio traffic to make my departure home!

Good to see (hear) you guys...

r22Butters, not sure what kind of a 300 you're flying but it's not hard to get them above 70 kts. Even up here in Colorado. I've been on cross countries where I constantly have to slow down becuase it keeps creeping closer and closer to Vne. The 300 is a great little helicopter for Colorado, I sure as hell wouldn't want to fly an r22 at altitude, that's why no one in Colorado uses them, they just can't handle the altitude. I just can't imagine what it would be like to fly one at sea level, I would have so much power avialible I wouldn't know what to do with myself!

I bet each company has/had a test pilot that exceeded those published numbers, so technically you could fly all of these as fast as you want with the doors off...at least once.

OK Goldy,

It has been over a year now and I have read enough about logging R-22 time and WOFT progress. When is the next fun fact going to be released?

Yeah, I can't relate to the WOFT stuff so it has me a bit disinterested as well! Good for those that want to serve our country and learn to fly....just not the way I did it.

I threw out these fun facts cause the board seemed to be a bit stagnant at the time. I'll think of some more, maybe related to the R44.
