Private to Commercial

Recommended Posts

Probably a silly question to those with a lot of experience but I need to get clarification on this as us beginners are just overwhelmed with it ( as you may remember ). Just passed my Private and building hrs to Commercial.

MY QUESTION - Do the flight time hrs achieved as requirements for Private count towards Commercial or are you expected to "start again"? For example - my Private XC solo will cover the Commercial 2 hr XC requirement if allowed. If I redo it am I just throwing money away?

Do my 3 hr nights for Private count towards my min 5 for Commercial?

I have read and re read the FAR/AIM until my eyes turned square trying to see if there is a clause indicating either way. The way I interpret the FAR/AIM they DO count?

I know all experience is good experience and am not for a moment trying to scrape through on a minimum ( believe me I was way over the 40 for my Private - which, of course, helps in improving overall flying ) but have to make sure my dollars spent are working towards the requirements as 100 hrs PIC is quite a lot of $$$$.

Thanks for your input and sage advice.

All time (night,X-country,instr) earned for a certificate also applies to your next certificate requirements. Get as much cross country time, night time, and instrument time as possible, don't just do the minimums, you'll wish you had more of everything later.

Congrats

Yes, but only toward the requirements specified in 61.129.c.1-2

No and no. 61.129.c.3-4 requires you to have training in the areas of operation listed in 61.127.b.3. This is the section that requires your XC, night, and solo time, and it is contained in the Commercial pilot requirements. Following that interpretation, you would also need 5 hours of instrument during your commercial, presumably even if you have an instrument rating.

That said, your FSDO and DPE might have a different interpretation.

Ask your instructor, if the CFI doesn't know, have them ask whoever is giving your checkride

This question comes up a lot and the answer ultimately comes down to your local people.

You can do a little searching on these forums and you will see whai I mean

Overall time counts, although the specific night hours and cross countries you need will need to be done over the specific items listed under the commercial section of the FAR's.

At least thats what the fsdo in AZ thought about the matter. Feel free to check your local source.

Seattle FSDO was the same; total time carries over but specific requirements for each rating must be accomplished independently as a part of the training for that rating. If you read the FARs correctly (pretend you're a lawyer), it's actually pretty clear. The overall and rating-specific requirements are in different paragraphs and follow different lead-in instructions altogether.

I asked the exact question last year of both my FSDO and local DPE. They both agree that each requirement is separate from each other, and private and commercial are separate. So you cannot take one CC and use it to meet the requirement of another.

Post the list of all commercial requirements and just start knocking them off one at a time.

Good luck,

Goldy

Thanks to all for the wise advice. I guess to be sure, I will go direct to my DPE to get his say as, ultimately, he has to sign off on the log book.

Thx again to all and keep posting - these forums are an addiction to those of us new in the industry.
