Canadian Conversion

Recommended Posts

Depends on what you want to do. You can do a foreign license validation certificate which gives you the ability to fly in Canada for one year based on your FAA. This is for recreational flying only. There is a written airspace exam.

There is no reciprocity for the Helicopter Commercial. If you want the TC commercial you will need to do the commercial written exam and a checkride. The written is harder than the FAA commercial with no bank of questions to study. The checkride is similar though in addition you will do stuck pedal, some instrument exercises under the hood, recovery from unusual attitudes, and actual navigation and diversion to alternate landing. I heard they recently stopped doing full down autos on the checkride but this may be at the examiners discretion. You will need an instructors recommendation to take the checkride.

Most FAA pilots do a 5 flight hour training course with ground instruction to prepare for the written and oral exam and get the recommend.

Good luck getting a work permit! When the Canadian helicopter industry was booming companies could sponsor foreigners but that has all changed.

FOREIGN LICENCE TO CANADIAN COMMERCIAL LICENCE

Pilots choosing Chinook Helicopters for their foreign licence conversion to the Canadian equivalent licence will benefit from the knowledge, skill and expertise of four high time Class 1 instructors as well as the near perfect training terrain in the Fraser Valley with the adjacent Coast Range Mountains to the north and the Cascade Range to the south and east. Abbotsford, located in the coastal area of southwestern British Columbia boasts the mildest winters in Canada due to the onshore marine influence on the Pacific Ocean. We also have short term and long term lodging available within walking distance of the school year round, in addition there are several fair prices car rental companies located right here at the airport. Because of the varying skill level and experience of students wishing to convert their licence, the flight hours and prices on our pricelist are only estimates. Many students complete the conversion in less than the listed number of hours and a few take a little extra time. We are committed to serving your schedule and are able to complete a conversion in just over one week although its recommended that at least 2 weeks are scheduled for unseen difficulties as can arise when dealing with many government agencies.

Requirements For Converting Your Foreign Licence

1) Medical Certificate

A Canadian Aviation Medical Certificate is required to issue a conversion licence and can take up to two months to complete. Therefore we highly recommend that you acquire your Canadian Aviation Medical Certificate in your home country well in advance of your training at Chinook Helicopters. A list of doctors able to issue the medical certificate ( both national and international ) can be found here - Here -

2) Written Exam

After arriving at our school you will begin studying for the commercial written exam. This studying can take some students a week or more to complete. In order to shorten your stay, we recommend that you study both the PSTAR exam and the TC Sample exam before arriving.

The PSTAR exam is - Here -

and the Transport Canada Sample Exam is - Here -

You will also need to reference the Transport Canada AIM book to help answer a lot of the questions. It is available - Here -

3) Flight Training and Flight Test

A minimum of one training / evaluation flight is recommended before attempting the commercial flight test, however, most students elect to fly between 2 to 4 hours to become familiar with the local area and Canadian flight test standards. In the event of an unsuccessful attempt at the flight test, the student will need to fly at least one training / recommendation flight before being able to retake the flight test as per Transport Canada rules. A comprehensive list of all the required exercises on the commercial flight test can be found in the Flight Test Guide - Here -

4) English and Radio exams

The Canadian government requires students to pass an English proficiency exam before having their commercial licence issued. Students who currently hold and English proficiency certificate that indicates both the level of proficiency and an expiry date are exempt from needing to take the exam. Students are also required to pass an Industry Canada radio exam. The study guide for this exam can be found - Here - and should be studied before arriving at the school

5) 10 Hour IFR (Hood) Requirement

Transport Canada requires student to have completed 10 hours of simulated instrument flight to issue the commercial licence. This simulated instrument time must have been completed with a flight instructor and must be in your log book. A maximum of 5 of the 10 hours can be in an approved flight simulator. If you are short on your instrument flight time, we have both the aircraft and flight simulator available to complete your training.

Check out Chinook Helicopters in Abbotsford BC. They do many of these conversion courses and are really good at it.

I've heard that the JAA also requires more than we do. Is there any country where its easier to become a pilot, than here in the USA?
