  1. 1. Is this a good time to start training as a helicopter pilot?

    • Now is a better time than ever before to begin your training.
    • Times are tough for low time pilots. Jobs are scarce, and flight time is more expensive than ever.
    • Depends on the individual.

I, much like Fred, would like to thank everyone on here that takes the time out of their lives to be positive, and lend advice to those of us that are striving to achieve success in a difficult and competitive industry. I lost out on the SSH deal, and am definitely paying for it now, but it didn't block me from my dreams. I pushed on, found a way to finish my training; I persevered. It has been a very long, very bumpy road, but I am almost there. Im poised for the next opportunity, and if it wasn't for the time and effort of some of the "older guys" on VR, I am not sure exactly where I'd be. I've certainly come to realize that it takes dedication, sacrifice, a great attitude, and a great group of friends to get to where you want to be in this industry!!

Thanks again to all you "old guys!"

I found this on the website of a school who advertises on JH, and thought it was somewhat amusing, as well as a bit relevant to the topic question.

:D

The Helicopter Industry

After finishing their flight training and gaining all their licenses, the next thing students ask is "what job opportunities are there for helicopter pilots?"

The outlook is very promising. At present there is a huge shortage of helicopter pilots. This is partly due to the growth of the helicopter industry itself and partly because the helicopter pilots that were trained for the Vietnam War are now beginning to retire. With an estimated 30,000 pilots retiring from the industry that leaves a huge gap for new aspiring helicopter pilots.

I guess they voted for the first choice.
