Hello All,

With the upgrade to the new software version for this forum, we have another option for rating other folk's posts and participation.

Please take the poll and tell me which you prefer. We were using the + or - reputation system with the green and red numbers that would go up or down depending on whether or not people liked your post.

The setting I have on there now for you to see is the new option of clicking the "Likes" button. It only shows likes and puts the username of the person who clicked it next to the like button.

I'm not trying to be negative but I've always thought the like/dislike system is pretty ridiculous. Kinda high schoolish I think

Hi guys,

I'm completely new here, so I figured I'd give my opinion as a new lurker/newbie.

I am totally for the "like" system, and let me tell you why:

I'm an adult. I can decide for myself who and who does not represent what I'm looking for in a post. With that said, it has only taken me a few days of lurking to figure out that Spike is probably one of the "go to" guys around here. With the +/- system, that didn't mean anything.

With the "like" system, I can search for posts that he has "liked" and not necessarily responded to. [At least, I hope this is a feature...]

Now, instead of everyone telling me they don't like someone because they downrate all his posts [grudge or no grudge], I can search for people "I" like to read.

Thanks,

The FNG

I personally am not a huge fan of the "like" thing, and am not big on the +/- thing either.

A person can usually get a feel about a particular comment based on responses, which I think encourages discussion, which is the point of a forum rather than hitting a button to blindly agree, disagree, or like

I think the rep system gives newer guys a better indication of what to pay attention to and what to ignore. That said, it doesn't matter to me which system we use, if any.

What I would like to see back, is when I click View New Content and then a thread that the window will automatically jump to the new post, instead of having to click another button.

Hi Admin

Not sure if this will help but I thought I'd contribute.

I wasn't a fan of the 'like' system either, we run a very busy international forum and since upgrading our to the 3.x.x version (the day it was released) we've noticed a large jump in the amount of people using it when compared to the reputation system.

We have enough stats coming in now to see that its peoples usage of this type of system in the main social networking sites that has triggered it. They use social media a lot, then come to the forum and see a similar structure for them to use, they feel more at home with it and use it more. It's had a marked, positive effect on our forum.

I must admit, I see the new guys point (from above) where he said he can look at people whose posts he likes......and then see what they like. With this new system, that is possible and one way to use it to your advantage.

On the other hand.....I saw the old system of +/- reputation to be very effective in a totally opposite way.

You recall recently the new member DUSTIN_BOATPIX?

Well, I do not say this in a mean way, but he came on very strong offline with me when he was going through the initial authorization process of becoming a member. I knew in my mind that if he came on that strong here, he would not be appreciated.

I kind of figured that if he did not tone it down, people would use the negative rating to send him signals that they did not like his style. Low and behold he currently has a rep of -241 and then came this post where he begged redemption:

http://helicopterforum.verticalreference.com/topic/15051-redeem-myself

System worked in that case. Sorry to use you as the example Dustin, but it was a case study perfect example.

^^^above^^^ Wow, really I dont every beg for ANYTHING, I have been ok, with not being cool with some people here...the whole process to get on here was pretty ridiculous, like I was trying to work with the government or such, I went back to my other screen name because I decided it would be better for the company I work with; so my OPINION doesnt reflect via screen name! I am proud to be with Boatpix and and PROUD to be who I am with my whole negative socialization of this site...I have been great in everything I've done and have accomplished many things. I will never be talked down to...based off my passion AND you people, trying to tell me I'm not passionate about Boatpix and "is this guy for REAL"....Yeah I'm real and very passionate about flying...nice above post....Checkmate!

The old system was good in theory and sometimes worked as intended. One data point of success isn't a yard stick to measure by. I can only offer that someone gave Butters negative rep no matter how good the advice he had given. Example - he got negative repped for telling someone not to quit their day job while training. That is just flat out down home good old common sense good advice right there... but it gets negative repped ? Why ? Anyhow I really don't have a dog in this fight, could care less about the reputation system. I don't need the endorsement of relative strangers to feel good about myself. I have my every day deeds and real life people that I deal with for that.

i dont really see how an anonymous rating system carries much weight. On the other hand? posts like #12 should have been kept private. I say do away with like/dislike and all the points.

I much preferred the +/- system, as it made people a little more aware of what they were saying, and caused them to be a little more civilized with what they post. If it were up to me, we would all be using our actual identities when we post on any online forums. I believe it would make us more accountable for what we say online and would all but eliminate internet trolls.

The JH forums would be a pretty boring place all of a sudden, if that rule actually ever went into effect!

At the minimum, take away the option of "dislike" after you have chosen to "like" a post. I think that would make people think before they act. It would offer an opportunity for more conversation of why someone felt negative about a post without dealing with a bunch of sheeple. And once someone changed thier mind on a subject/post, they could explain why, instead of just pushing the button.

I had no problem with the +/- system other than nobody had to own up to what they clicked. And I agree it was obvious when no matter what Butters posted, someone was going to give him a negative mark. I have read many of butters posts and yes there has been some negative (frustrated) posts from him. There has also been good advise and informative posts from him however, it seems no matter what he says someone will mark him negative... That is the one downfall I see.

I also see the same thing happening to Dustin which you all know by now. He posted a very informative video lately, yet due to his past history, I'm sure with the +/- he would have had at least 1 neg purely from his prior rep before the neg button pusher ever took a look at the video.

All that being said, I like the old system better, there are a few of us that fix the trolls negative actions when the post is good. I guess it all comes out in the wash.

I would only like to add to this statement because obviously this is not JH forums number one and number two even in the most heated arguments I've read on this site it has not to my memory come down to name calling, swearing or anything of the like that you would see on JH. So while your statement is high in merit, there is little need of it here. If anyone took the time to know me through PM I gladly share my information. I did learn the hard way from the Air Force and the OPSEC manager just how easily your information can be culled on the internet. Might not make much sense to civilians but I can guarantee that the AF takes what information we put out there very seriously. I can tell you from information that was showed to me first hand if you don't seriously believe that there is a strong possibility of terrorist cells working in our very back yards than you are in for a very big surprise ! Semi-anonymity isn't always bred of deviousness.

I think the "+" "-" thing is I think more useful but I have had it lead to some misunderstandings and I have had the impression that there has been some mild abuse by people using the system to pursue personal vendetta's thought the community as a whole has tended to balance those out.

What I appreciate about the like system is the names attached to it. I would prefer a "+" "-" system that recorded names so as to make respondents accountable and prevent misunderstandings. Don't know if that is an option though...
