ozzie1 Posted January 24, 2013 Posted January 24, 2013 Here we go. Looking for opinions! I'm Commercial rotorcraft finishing up CFI. Trying to decide which way would make one more employable. Geting my CFII, or i have the chance to get commercial fixed wing ratings single, multi eng, cfii etc. Where i live, students are hard to come by, so building hours is tough. Thanks for your time. AdminLB Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 If you are looking to become employable sooner than later, then get the helicopter CFII. Without it, you are NOT competitive in the entry level helicopter job market. If you have plenty of time and money to spare, get the fixed wing ratings. They will have value down the road if you continue to gain experience in both categories. Quote
ozzie1 Posted January 25, 2013 Author Posted January 25, 2013 Thanks Lyn for the response. That' s what I was thinking, but wanted to put it out there and see what others had to say. Thanks again. Quote
HeliUtah Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 If you want to fly helicopters, then get the CFII. Tours, GOM, etc. have minimums that are based on helicopter time, not total time. The fixed wing certs and time won't help until you are up to the 2000-3000 hour level jobs. Quote
eagle5 Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 Get your CFII in helicopters! If students are hard to come by, move to where they aren't! Quote
rotormandan Posted January 25, 2013 Posted January 25, 2013 Why don't you have the chance to do both? Adding a cfii to a cfi shouldn't take much. Especially if you have an instrument rating, while getting all of those fixed wing rating would tske a lot more work Quote
ericcbohn Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 Instrument practice and cross country experience is cheaper fixed wing, and would count towards an atp in both categories. You can also fly actual IFR in small airplanes, something I understand you can't do in your typical trainer helicopter - valuable experience. A commercial add-on and instrument rating airplane wouldnt take too much work , especially if youve just completed the cfii helicopters and the instrument knowledge is fresh. If youre main goal was to fly helicopters I wouldnt spend any more money on airplanes beyond this unless youve got money to burn and take everyone elses advice and move somewhere you can build more time at..
