Jbryant77 Posted February 9, 2013 Posted February 9, 2013 Hello everyone This is my first post and I hope it's not against any rules... I collect military radio equipment and in my hunt for that stuff I come up with all kinds of things..I recently came into a pile of NOS parts for some Vietnam/Korean era helicopter... I have no idea what to do with this stuff and came here hoping you guys could help..I need to find someone local in Dallas-ft. Worth or online that can I'd these parts and maybe tell me who would want them.. I'm sure there are people out there needing this stuff and I don't want to take it to the scrap yard...Thanks Jason Quote
Gomer Pylot Posted February 10, 2013 Posted February 10, 2013 Without the proper paperwork and history, they can't be used on aircraft. Their only use would be for collectors, and they really aren't that collectible, since they are so common. You can buy brand new, certified parts for all the aircraft used in Vietnam, so the parts you have aren't worth much, unless you also have the proper paperwork. If these are just electronics, they may be worth something, but since they're just old, not new or rare, it won't be a lot. Quote
Jbryant77 Posted February 10, 2013 Author Posted February 10, 2013 The parts I have to the best of my knowledge are..Blast shields?Manifold pipesBerings BushingsGasketsTransmision partsGaugesMany different small machined parts Thanks Jason Quote
Gomer Pylot Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Without the proper documentation, it's all scrap. Quote
Jbryant77 Posted February 11, 2013 Author Posted February 11, 2013 Thanks for the help I will make money on the scrap I've got plenty of it... I'll let you guys get back in the air now...Thanks again Quote
apiaguy Posted February 11, 2013 Posted February 11, 2013 Not true about being scrap. They can be used on aircraft. You just have to know what you have and be able to identify it. Just cause you don't have any paperwork where it came from does not make it junk Some operations may not be able to use it depending on what parts they are and traceability issues but others may be able to use it. Any part numbers or any idea what they are from? Quote
Jbryant77 Posted February 11, 2013 Author Posted February 11, 2013 It is from a military depot from the mid 1960's... The packages are all labeled with mil spec numbers and contract numbers and dates... I can understand airframe parts needing documents but I've got hardware and things I don't see needing that kinda traceability.. If I post a few part numbers can someone atleast tell me what helicopter they go to?Thanks Jason Quote
electron_si Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 I think it would be tough but you might be able to fed log that stuff. Thats the Army's logistics ordering system. If it has an NSN (national Stock number) you should be able to look it up by that Quote
apiaguy Posted February 13, 2013 Posted February 13, 2013 quit asking if you can post and post some numbers already.. the only way if someone here is going to know to help you.... again, airframe parts are still good items even without documents.. if it has an ink stamp on it or otherwise identifiable part number it may be perfectly fine to install on an aircraft. Gomer Pylot Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 Some people might be willing to use anonymous parts on their machines, but I don't know of any reputable operators that would. Quote
apiaguy Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 (edited) i suppose as a pilot you wouldn't know what is on your machine. not trying to be arguementative about it... but to suggest a part without some sort of paperwork that is new is somehow not eligible to be installed is not correct. Different story if we are talking about life limited components and component cards but from the op it doesn't sound like that is the case.. Either way, a mechanic can install a part or component if it meets type design (OEM or PMA) or is somehow identifiable (ink stamped part number or other).Yes, the aviation industry is on high alert for "bogus parts" and a buyer should beware who they get their parts from. Know your stuff.Even life-limited parts... when they come from the factory or distributor, they don't have hard cards yet (depends on mfg).. the original installer starts that card. 500F Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 Gomer, we aren't ralking rotor blades here. There are plenty of non-critical airframe parts that many operators would use if they were the correct part. Quote
Rob1237051 Posted February 14, 2013 Posted February 14, 2013 It's only the major components and calibrated items (n1 gauge, altimeter etc) that are tracked in the sense the pilots on here have in mind. Like the other poster said...Original equipment manufacturer parts can be inspected and utilized. A pressure switch is a pressure switch and a check valve is a check valve. Quote
Gomer Pylot Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 I'm sure there are some operators that would buy parts from some random person and install them on their aircraft, but I would not work for those operators if I knew about it. There is a difference between buying parts from a reputable supplier and buying them from some unknown guy's car trunk. And that's pretty much what is being contemplated here. Quote
electron_si Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 This thread has gotten a little weird, on topic, but not I don't really think its going where the OP intended. He needs to provide part #'s and pictures and see if people can figure out what they are, then list them on ebay with an as-is disclaimer, or scrap them. Quote
