SgtSpankie Posted March 13, 2013 Posted March 13, 2013 Good Morning All,I am a former Marine and have been working in the logistics field for 15+ years. Last year I was laid off from my job in AZ, relocated to the east to live with family and have had little luck in finding something in the logistics or administrative field. I am luckily in the position to be living with family and take my time to find a job I will like and can make a long term career out of in a location I like. I have always loved the idea of becoming a helicopter pilot and I was wondering if anyone can possibly point me in the right direction as far as if there is any sort of financial aid for someone trying to start in this field. I can devote all my time to education and training I just don't have the finances to do so. I'm willing to learn just about any new career field, but I figured if I was going to look into it, why not look into something you have always loved. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. -Phillip Quote
ralpez Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 Most of the info you are looking for exists in other threads. Everyone on here is willing to help but try using the search bar and then come back to ask for more specific information. 1 Quote
Rogue Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 Best advice I ever got was right here on this site. Pay cash for your Private and THEN decide if you still want to be a helicopter pilot. Quote
Fred0311 Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 (edited) Do you have post 911 gi bill? Theres alot of options for you if you do. The most important things though are educate yourself on the realities of the industry and how much work it will take to break into it. As was already said browse through the forums here. I've seen alot of people fail already because they had no idea what they were getting into and just thought it would be cool, and I haven't even been involved with helicopters for a year yet... If it's your passion though and you are ready to put in the hard work, live on ramen noodles for the next four years or so and be a gypsy you can suceed. Edited March 16, 2013 by Fred0311 Quote
pilot#476398 Posted March 16, 2013 Posted March 16, 2013 So, you're living at home because you lost your job and can't find another one? Well I'm living at home because I lost my flying job and can't find another one! If you're looking for a new career I wouldn't look in aviation! My advice; go back to the military! A friend of mine just retired after 20yrs in the Navy and is living a pretty good life now! Quote
Counterrotate Posted March 17, 2013 Posted March 17, 2013 Hey, there should be lots of helicopter jobs opening up soon! All the vietnam era pilots are going to be retiring soon! Quote
Velocity173 Posted March 17, 2013 Posted March 17, 2013 Hey, there should be lots of helicopter jobs opening up soon! All the vietnam era pilots are going to be retiring soon! I'd agree with that if it wasn't for the fact that in the Army we were putting double the amount of students through after 9/11 than before. You'll see a lot if those guys retiring and even some getting forced out. I've had an Army 60 guy and an AF 60 guy stop into my work (HEMS) just in the last few months asking about jobs. Quote
pilot#476398 Posted March 17, 2013 Posted March 17, 2013 Why do I have this feeling that the market is about to be flooded with low to mid time military pilots ALL vastly more qualified than any 1000-2000 hour civilian pilot!? ...and those Vietnam guys already retired years ago! Quote
Fred0311 Posted March 17, 2013 Posted March 17, 2013 It's about to be flooded with gi bill users... Quote
Carpenter Posted March 17, 2013 Posted March 17, 2013 It's about to be flooded with gi bill users... It's not about to be; It already is! Quote
Wally Posted March 18, 2013 Posted March 18, 2013 (edited) ...and those Vietnam guys already retired years ago! Uh... not quite. Three of the four pilots at my base are Viet Nam era and we're a fairly stable proportion of pilot population for the last couple decades. The clock is ticking, it won't be long, however.
