tsimmns Posted July 17, 2013 Posted July 17, 2013 Maybe another dumb question, but here it is. If your vision is bad enough that you have to wear contacts, but it's correctable to 20/20 does the Army make you have surgery to correct it before sending you to WOFT? Anyone have any info on this? Quote
electron_si Posted July 20, 2013 Posted July 20, 2013 I have 20/30 near vis. I ha to get a waiver when i had my flt phys done at rucker Quote
tsimmns Posted July 21, 2013 Author Posted July 21, 2013 So basically if you have worse than 20/400 you are DQ if I am reading this chart rigth. Quote
Lindsey Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 So basically if you have worse than 20/400 you are DQ if I am reading this chart rigth. To be an Army Aviator, you need a Class 1 Flight Physical, so 20/50 distant and 20/20 near. Quote
tsimmns Posted July 21, 2013 Author Posted July 21, 2013 So are you saying if you wear contacts or glasses you can't be an Army Aviator? 1 Quote
ftxag76 Posted July 21, 2013 Posted July 21, 2013 So are you saying if you wear contacts or glasses you can't be an Army Aviator? You can be an aviator if your eye sight is 20/50 correctable to 20/20 via (glasses, contacts). If its worse then 20/50 but correctable you are NPQd or DQd ( disqualified). The only other way around this that I know of is to get Eye surgery. Quote
tsimmns Posted July 21, 2013 Author Posted July 21, 2013 Welp, guess this counts me out as my vision is pretty bad. Not sure, how bad, just now that I am near sighted and my contacts are -3.75 Sigh Quote

My contact lens prescription was significantly worse than yours, and while the surgery is expensive, it is a very quick procedure and VERY well worth it. I am now 20/15 (better than 20/20) and have passed the Army Flight Physical and successfully been granted a waiver for LASIK. Quote
tsimmns Posted July 21, 2013 Author Posted July 21, 2013 Thanks for the advice on LASIK. Problem is with me being 30 don't know if in the long run it would pay off. Getting the surgery, getting a waiver all while having budget cuts doesn't sound promising. Bigger sigh Quote
d10 Posted July 22, 2013 Posted July 22, 2013 I've never heard anyone say "I regret getting LASIK" and most of them do it just for the benefit of seeing better. So you could get it done and if you decide not to go through with your WOFT application you'll still probably be happy you got the surgery. Quote
tsimmns Posted July 23, 2013 Author Posted July 23, 2013 I guess you are right. Getting the LASIK would be more beneficial than just helping me try to get to WOFT. And with the cost these days it seems crazy not to get it I guess. Quote
Joe_P148 Posted July 23, 2013 Posted July 23, 2013 You don't want to be wearing glasses or contacts while wearing NVG's, get the surgery.... Quote
