My quest into WOCS

Recommended Posts

Shoulder surgery waiver granted! Thank god.

I had two serious shoulder surgeries prior to WOCS, one during flight school, and another since. Know that the second you touch the cyclic your annual flight physical requirements are not as severe, so if you get passed this one, don't worry about it any more.

Recruiter just called me and said before i can proceed with my flight physical they need me to go to an eye doctor and have a refraction test completed on my own (and on my own dime of course). Havent heard of anyone needing this. When i went through MEPS my vision was noted as 20/17 left eye 20/20 right eye. I thought they did an eye exam the same day they do your flight physical?

So to update. Just did my MEPs physical and SIFT today. They did write DQ due to my shoulder but are submitting a waiver. Odds are i will have to meet with a specialist for evaluation first they said. As it stands. Asvab of 131 GT, 95 AFQT, SIFT of 70. And meps physical complete.

Hey Jeff. Those are some awesome scores. I'm just beginning to put together my package for WOFT and I am getting ready to take the SIFT. I am prior service with a 124 GT score. Just wondering what you did to prepare for the SIFT. Any study guides that you would recommend? I am in NY (Long Island).

Also, my recruiter told me that I would have to go all the way to West Point to take the test. Anyone in the New York area that can confirm? I saw here in a previous post that I could try an ROTC program; luckily there is one at the school I'm currently enrolled in so I might give that a shot.

What part of long island? I was born and raised in Riverhead. The closest meps i was aware of is Staten Island. Maybe they can offer it? I used a combination of the sift study guide on amazon.com and the FAA handbook.

So i called the flight surgeon at the base here in PA and they wont even schedule a flight phys without this 2808 supplement. Scheduled to have it done on the 31st which was the quickest the doc could get me in.

So im writing this here in hopes that I can look back in the future and reference it. While putting together the rest of my packet ive been trying to up my PT as much as I can. I still dont feel like im in the best shape i was in after 3 rounds of insanity but the trade off there was that my strength went down. I went back to some old college ways in terms of training and brought out my lifting routine from college baseball, but now added in a lot of cardio. As it sits I've been doing a 4 day lifting split that looks like this.

25 minute progressive run, Legs

Chest, triceps, 2 mile sprint run

30 minute progressive run, back, biceps

25 minute progressive run, core

Shoulders, Core, 2 mile sprint run

30 minute progressive run, Core

Off

The progressive runs have helped tremendously to lower my 2 mile time. Its way too cold here to be outside running lately but my treadmill time has gotten down to a 12:52 2 mile. The progressive runs are treadmill based and meant to speed up my feet. I pick a starting point and every 5 mins i put the speed by .5. When i began it was 6.0 to start and now i start at 7.5 speed and continue on. So as it stands here are my stats:

6'0

201 pounds

2 mile time: 12:52 treadmill

Bench: 315

Squat: 375

Deadlift: 335

BF: ~9-10%

Im using those stats since many people are familiar with those lifts. Hope this helps anyone else who searches for training or needs any ideas.

Is your treadmill level during this? Try a 1.0 or 2.0 incline to better simulate actual running on the road

Unplug the treadmill, open your front door, and go run outside. A treadmill is good for burning calories, and for working on increasing your stride, but it is not a great tool for reducing pace for long distances.

Believe me i would love to but id have pneumonia after 3 days. Its been anywhere from 7-10 degrees each morning here lately with the wind. I did a 5k last weekend for a fundraiser and ran it in 24:10. This weekend looks to be warming up a bit so im definitely going to get out when I can.

All done with the DD2808 supplement. 20/15 distant vision 20/20 near vision. Cyclopelgic has +.50 OD and +.25 OS. Docs comments were "excellent ocular health". Hopefully they won't make me do it over again during the flight phys since they are the ones who requested this and I had to pay out of pocket for it. Time to ride the struggle bus for the rest of the day as I can barely make out my keyboard right now and hoped that I typed this right.

Finally starting to wear off but its the weirdest feeling ive ever had in my eyes. Could see distance no problem but anything within 15 feet of me was a blur haha. Couldnt even make out the letters on the keyboard.
