If there is any question regarding the importance of NVGs to helicopter crews, take a look at this very brief clip. This was shot during a search for two lost hikers in a mountainous area where there are no city lights and very few houses. In the first 8 seconds you can see a spot of light coming from the window of one home before we turn on the NVGs. Thereafter, the terrain becomes shockingly obvious. The flashing light coming from the top of the ridge is a flashlight carried by one of the hikers. Through the NVGs, it looks like a lighthouse.

If you encountered an emergency while flying in this terrain without NVGs, you would not be able discern a field from a lake from a hillside.
