I’ve been watching old heli clips. It appears that even through the Viet Nam era of training they use skid mounted wheels and or wheel sonly. I only know of one new small heli that currently have wheels the IcePick.

Why were the skid tip wheels removed from the old trainers as seen here:

Without watching the 30 min video I'm assuming you mean the ground handling wheels? They are for moving the helicopter around on the ground. You take them off when you go fly. I've seen 300s that have them fixed to the skids but it's extra weight. It only takes a second to put the on. There is no reason to leave them on. For the Huey's and other larger helicopters the ground handling wheels are very heavy.

I have a Rotorway and also fly an R22. No they had stationary front wheels nearly flush with the skids. Not like the removable over-center ground handling wheels we all still use. Note mine can be flown with them up and pinned for remote location ground handling.

Here's the Diora IcePik with front castering wheels and fixed rears:

Take a look at 9:35...but I'd put them on the outside of the skid instead of the inside. Probably cost you 5 knots?
