As a member of the IHST Safety & (Safety Management System) SMS committee, I was asked during two web conferences recently to query the participants/viewers of the VR forums if they felt a Forum section/area on SMS would be educational, informative and beneficial?

I ask if all viewers would respond with either (valuable, informative) or (not interested).

I expect to get "I do not need a stinking SMS section".

Originally, the effort was to be developed only on the Just Helicopter forum area.

I felt that the traffic here on VR would help with my area of responsibility in Outreach & Education about SMS.

I ask for sincere and professional response and hope for the best!

Mike

PS There will be many presentations at Heli Expo on SMS in both the Rotorcraft Safety Challenge (RSC) series and other IHST presentations. www.ihst.org www.ushst.org

I think an SMS Forum could be beneficial if there are enough members here involved in SMS.

My organization is heavily involved in SMS based on our falling under IS-BAO (the ICAP has adopted the IS-BAO standard) as we continue to progress through the certification stages.

(That sure was a mouthful...lol)

I think any further sections dedicated to safety is a bonus for anyone here. If you can learn one thing here from all the experience that might save your life one day then it was worth it. Much the same way I feel about using simulators.

I agree with the folks above and would vote for a dedicated section. There is no doubt that an SMS program is coming to an operation near you :-). All of our Utility contracts require that we have one, and most of the time it’s near the first question asked in the negotiations.

Most companies are afraid of the cost and the immensity of setting up a program.. but, truth is that it’s not so hard, and, it’s awesome to see the whole operation come together to support it and realized that they all are a part of the solution. Mike installed our program and it’s now an integral part of our operation. So, imho, you do something that is inevitable, it makes your operation safer and helps everyone there step-up their situational awareness (not only on the ground, but in the air).

Here Mike is offering to do what he does best, give back to the industry, in another way that could help many. There are surely companies out there now realizing that they will have to do this, or those that have their ‘SMS Program’ book sitting on a shelf doing nothing, having his input would be extremely valuable to many.

just saying.

What dp said. It is/will be coming to an operation near you, if it has not already.

Let me remind you of a saying, I like to use when the "winds of change" maybe coming:

"It better you pick and choose vs relying on the benevolence of someone that may not like you!"

Having been in aviation safety since 1982, a M.S Degree in Aviation Safety, graduate of the USC Aviation Safety Management Degree Program, and an NTSB trained accident investigator the SMS is NOT going anywhere. Nor should it.

mikemv, go for it.

Be safe,

Clarification!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

As usual things get off topic easily. This is not about me but about the IHST/USHST SMS committee creating another avenue for information and education about SMS to be introduced and taken forward for the benefit of every pilot.

There are companies like Prism, Baldwin and others with members on our committee that would have input and are recognized industry professionals. It would be a place where questions could be asked and answered and mysteries solved.

The committee is monitoring the responses here before approaching RoProMedia about adding a dedicated SMS sub forum. RoPro Media is a demonstrated supporter of IHST/USHST initiatives.

Industry has suggested that the Private Pilot PTS contain a task or area of special emphasis on SMS. My take on that was "What CFI was going to prepare an applicant for that part of the practical test?".

IHST is working on both updating the PTSs and writing fact sheets for CFIs on the elements of SMS and implementing them.

The goal is to educate pilots and assist with a means of implementation.

I heartily agree that a dedicated SMS Forum would be beneficial to all concerned. As one contributor correctly stated, "SMS isn't going anywhere". Providing another avenue for the sharing/promoting of SMS would only benefit the industry as a whole. One key advantage of SMS is having a database of incidents/accidents available for all company personnel to learn from. In my current organization for example, this database places literally thousands of hours of flight experience at the fingertips of anyone caring to look. Want to know if the aircraft you're flying has ever been involved in a incident? Just type the N# in the search bar. Wondering where the most bird strikes happen in Peru? You get the idea.
