A medical helicopter crashed on the roof the University of New Mexico Hospital shortly after takeoff, sending the bird on its side and breaking off its tail Wednesday evening.

Three people were aboard but all seemed to have escaped serious injury after the 6 p.m. wreck. A pilot was being examined and no patients were aboard.

Hospital floors directly below the helipad were evacuated after firefighters responded to the roof and sprayed the wreckage with water.

The chopper attempted to take off, began to wobble then jerked before it tumbled to the roof, a witness told KOAT-TV.
