Helicopter Internship Proposal

Hey Guys,

 

I'm looking at creating an internship proposal for some utility helicopter companies at the airport where I flight train. Im not looking to fly for the companies, rather just to help out their operations in order to get a foot in the door of the helicopter industry and better my resume.

 

My Background:

Im working towards my commercial helicopter rating in Colorado. Im a hard worker and not scared to get my hands dirty. Im good with computers, heavy equipment, and have some mechanic skill.

 

What I'm looking for is some ideas on different areas of a utility helicopter operation where a intern or helping hand would be beneficial, and for ways I could put my skills and hard work to use to improve their business and justify getting an intern. (Besides being a pilot/mechanic)

Get a job at the airport as a fuel jocky. Once they get to know you a bit, then ask them if there's anything you can do for them as a possible intern?

I'm also confused. If you don't want to fly or be a mechanic, what are you looking for?

 

I've heard of plenty of people who get their foot in the door at a company by simply helping sweep floors, wash aircraft, etc.. But these people are trying to work towards eventually working for the company as a pilot.

 

I doubt your resume is gonna get any better or look more attractive because you did office clerical work at a utility company.

Any company that can get their hands on an intern that is businesslike would jump at the chance. When the term intern is used it generally means unpaid. Now as long as that businesslike, unpaid intern isn't going to cost them any grief or money, any value they get out of you is value they wouldn't have had otherwise.

I considered doing something like this with a local ems operator. My idea was it might be worth the effort for a letter of recommendation and industry contacts. I realized though between work and school I wouldn't have the time to make a meaningful commitment to them.

I thought I addressed that potential issue when I wrote won't "cost them any grief or money".

They should have an intern oil puddle slip and fall contest. Best 2 out of 3 falls.

You'd be better off putting your effort into getting your CFII, a paid job as an instructor and plenty of flight time. Then a utility company will pay you large amounts of money, when you get the appropriate experience, to fly for them.

Don't waste your time on an "internship", your resume won't look much better for it.
