fatbretcantjump Posted June 4, 2014 Posted June 4, 2014 (because I'll be joining your ranks soon!) Not sure yet which troop. Just looking for some good advice on things like where to live... whether to ship a car over... anything I'm not thinking about that I need to start doing now. Thanks! 1 Quote
Joe_P148 Posted June 9, 2014 Posted June 9, 2014 If you have animals you need to start the quarantine and shots process like yesterday. The state of Hawaii is EXTREMELY sensitive about animals coming to the islands. Where you live depends on a lot of things, how early do you like to get up for PT? What do you do on your off time? Are you single? The only place I'd avoid to live all together is waianae it's on the west side, it's beautiful but it's as local as it comes and the drive is hard in the morning. Some guys really loved town I.e. Honolulu or Waikiki but again the traffic is a Bitch in the morning and the evening typically going the opposite direction but still a lot. I lived in Kapokei and Ewa Beach both on the south shore and anywhere from 15 mins to an hour to get to work and about 5 mins to the beach. Be prepared to get a safety inspection for you vehicle every year. No big deal if you have a stock vehicle but if you have a 4x4 or any after market mods you may be looking for a questionable guy named kimo or something like that to pay under the table to pass your sh*t. Pm if you have any more questions... Good luck. Quote
fatbretcantjump Posted June 12, 2014 Author Posted June 12, 2014 Thanks for the reply. I'm single and wanting to pocket some BAH... was also thinking I'd like to deal with traffic as little as possible. Would that mean close to the Wheeler gate? Or would I be better off near the North Shore? Regarding vehicles, what's the deal with motorcycles around there? Here at Rucker it's so restrictive it's not really worth having one. Quote
Joe_P148 Posted June 12, 2014 Posted June 12, 2014 We'll, North Shore is cool but it's a 1 lane road from haliewa to wheeler, it's been known to back up. It really depends on your life-style. If you want to save BAH you could find a room mate. Motorcycles are restrictive, welcome to the Army. You can expect them to be just as restrictive in Hawaii as they were at Rucker. Quote
NCOtoWO Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Mililani isn't too bad. About 5-7 minutes to Wheeler on Kam Hwy. Rent is pretty decent as well and you'll likely save on electric since most of the places around there don't have A/C (it's pretty tolerable even in the summer without). Ewa Beach is nice and would also be a good choice, but rent is a little more and A/C will run up your electric. Ewa is about 30 minutes out but you won't hit a whole lot of traffic coming up H-2 in the morning and just a little coming back down on H-1W after work (most of the traffic goes into Honolulu/ Waikiki in the am and out in the pm). As far as bikes go, it's a bit of a pain but well worth it. You'll need to have a safety inspection done and bring your bill of lading and current registration to the registration office. You'll fail the initial safety due to registration, but just register with your fail slip and bring it back into the shop with your new Hawaii registration and they'll give you a pass slip. A lot of people complain about Hawaii Rides in Wahiawa and their "reflector ripoff" but I took my bike in and paid the $15 for the safety and $6 for a few stick on reflectors, not a horrible sacrifice as it did the job. In my opinion, six extra bucks was worth not having to ride to Waipahu or Aiea just for a safety, considering Hawaii Rides is about 3-4 blocks from the vehicle registration facility I went to (Wahiawa Sattelite City Hall/ PD) which is right off post as well. Let me know if you have further questions. Good luck and welcome to the island. Quote
Tradewinds Posted June 26, 2014 Posted June 26, 2014 My son rents in the North Shore, Waialua. Doesn't seem to have an issue with traffic, about a 15 min. commute to Wheeler. There is not a lot other then great beaches in the North Shore, for entertainment you'll be making your way south. He shares a house with 2 others so rent is cheap with a nice chunk of BAH left over. When they do decide to go to Waikiki they usually just get a place to stay for the night. During the winter the water gets pretty rough on the North Shore, great for experienced surfing, not so good for swimming or snorkeling. What airframe are you flying? Quote
fatbretcantjump Posted July 1, 2014 Author Posted July 1, 2014 58's. Thanks for the suggestions! Anyone have any luck bringing privately-owned weapons? Right now planning on leaving my guns with my parents rather than deal with the mandatory state registration. Quote

You have to go down to the PD, stand in line, pay a fee, and have your guns inspected and registered. Quote

Great Airframe, do you know which troop you will be assigned A, B, or C The only downside to flying the 58 is that you won't be flying it for long. The 2-6 is going to Korea for their 9 month deployment early in 2015, when they get back their 58's will be gone. It will be time to figure out the transition process to a different airframe or chase the 58's to a unit that still has them. Either way, make the most out of being in Hawaii, between Korea and the transition, you probably won't be on the Island very long. Quote

wizey Posted July 15, 2014 Posted July 15, 2014 Enjoy your time there. I lived on the North shore and it was great. Two roads actually go from the north shore to post. Don't live past turtle beach and Haleiwa if you don't want to deal with tourist traffic. I lived by Dillingham and had no problems with traffic. Enjoy flying the 58 while it last, sorry you got into the party late. Look at flying the Robinsons down at Honolulu to build some time if you don't get to go on the Korea trip. A lot of guys picked up their fixed wing license there as well in between deployments. Quote
