aussiecop Posted June 23, 2014 Posted June 23, 2014 Not sure if you can view this topic without being a member on this forum, but this is some really interesting stuff, being an expat I try and keep up on as much as I can in case I ever want to go back. CASA in Australia has a horrible reputation for running around like a lone wolf making regulations that never get passed through anyone but themselves and other things like grounding pilots without due cause and leaving them hanging for years with no official recourse. Their latest move is to attempt to make any pilot with a color vision deficiency resit a color deficiency exam and change the standard to another more difficult test, with no cause other than to justify their existence. There is an interesting youtube video attached in the thread that you should watch. The senator (like our congressmen) conducting the hearing about this just tears the CASA director a new one as he has clearly done his research into the matter and they are left looking like idiots. It will be interesting to see how this plays out. http://www.bladeslapper.com/content/bb/viewtopic.php?f=52&t=9036 Quote

Australia has a horrible reputation for running around like a lone wolf making regulations that never get passed through anyone but themselves. Look at their attempt at gun control: In 1996 newly elected Prime Minister John Howard of Australia pushed for stricter gun control. That year the Australian Parliament passed the National Firearms Agreement which banned the private ownership of all semiautomatic rifles and semiautomatic and pump action shotguns. The new law also established more restrictions in the licensing of other firearms. According to the National Firearms Agreement private citizens were forced to turn over the banned weapons in a government buyback system. Beginning on October 1, 1966 through September 30, 1997, the Australian government spent $500 million in purchasing and destroying more than 631,000 banned guns. Howard and other politicians promised the citizens of Australia that they would be safer now that these horrible weapons had been taken off the streets. However, that was not the case! Since Australia banned semiautomatic rifles, shotguns and pump action shotguns the gun crime rates have skyrocketed throughout the country. Murders committed with guns increased by 19%.Home invasions increased by 21%.Assaults committed with guns increased by 28%.Armed robberies skyrocketed with an increase of 69%. Many former gun owners blame the government and their gun control laws for the increases in crimes. They feel helpless in their own homes, unable to protect themselves. In fact, home invasions were so rare prior to the gun ban that the nation did not even have a legal definition for what a home invasion was. Seeing the direct results of what the ban on guns did in Australia, they are now warning us not to follow in their footsteps. The lesson? Gun control only affects the law abiding gun owners. Criminals are empowered by it. Australian Gun Ban Facts & Statistics http://youtu.be/SGq-VWQCEG4'>http://youtu.be/SGq-VWQCEG4 Edited June 23, 2014 by iChris 5 Quote
Flying Pig Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 I was in Australia in 1996 when that was all coming down the pipe.... the natives were not happy. Quote

Yeah, busy inventing new ways to screw everyone who is trying to operate an aircraft. Seriously, the rest of the world is best off using CASA as an example for how to NOT manage civil aviation. They are giving Europe a run for their money when it comes to mismanagement and killing aviation with bureaucracy. Except Australia, being a huge, sparsely populated country, actually depends a lot more on their general aviation fleet than any place in Europe does. Edited June 24, 2014 by lelebebbel Quote
aussiecop Posted June 24, 2014 Author Posted June 24, 2014 iChris, Agreed mate, but I always have an exit plan...way things are going here you just never know. I was probably somewhere in that video. That whoe buyback thing was a sham from the start. I was surprised at the amount of people that willingly handed them over like sheep. It's ok though, because the police will protect them right? because that's what outlawing guns does right, they all go away. Same as when they made drugs illegal? Sheesh, the mentality. Why do you think it was so easy to leave... CASA is the icing on the cake though. Just an utter bunch of retards. Quote
aussiecop Posted June 24, 2014 Author Posted June 24, 2014 Here's the latest story on this. This is a pretty well respected show in Australia, so hopefully it makes these idiots at CASA realize that the aviation world is about to close in on them and make them all look like fools. Again, this senator shows up, who for the first time in many years I can say I really like (for a politician) for standing up and trying to get government support to back the pilot bringing the legal case. This is one of the reasons that Australia is going down the tubes in my book though. The government should have the oversight to just tell CASA that it's a bad idea and they have already done enough damage and to back off and forget it. Sadly, they lack the spine to do so. So who wants to be a pilot in Australia? lol https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iGJFFObtYiA&feature=youtu.be Quote
aeroscout Posted June 24, 2014 Posted June 24, 2014 From what aussiecop has offered about being a pilot down under...no thanks. 1 Quote
Astro Posted June 25, 2014 Posted June 25, 2014 I'd go there to muster cattle in a 22 if I could. 1 Quote
