Is post selection and or assignment at the same time as aircraft selection? Or is it while you're in advanced airframe?

You'll select aircraft and be given a list of post assignments for each aircraft (all possible locations, not just the ones that will be available to people in your class). You list your top three, and then wait for assignments to come out while you're in advanced airframe. Some people get one of their three picks, but most get sent wherever the Army needs people that week.

I'm curious as to anyone's thoughts on 3rd CAB at Hunter AAF and 16th CAB at JBLM? Not as interested in knowing about the area as I am about thoughts on the units themselves. Still a ways out from aircraft selection, but it never hurts to start gathering information early on.

This is assuming Hawks.

There's Campbell, and then there's everywhere else.

Really though the unit doesn't matter. A CAB is a CAB. It's the leadership that makes a unit good, and whatever leadership a unit has now will soon be shuffled around.

What about unique skillsets/missions/rotations for these CABs? Any? I know 4-6 just got back from a tour in Korea, things of that nature.

I'd imagine Hunter would be nice, being separated from Stewart and all. Insight?

I have a few buddy's at Hunter and going to Hunter. Nice place, not nessesarly looked upon as the best aviation unit. Again, just word on the street so don't shoot the messenger.

I was in 3 CAB. Really, like D10 said, it's just another CAB. They all basically do the same missions. At Campbell you obviously do plenty of AA but you'll get in on some fast rope, rappelling and maybe some SPIES there. 82nd you'll get in in some para drops. At 3 CAB unless you have a particularly motivated Bn Cdr, you probably won't be doing much of that cool stuff. Especially with today's budget.

At 3 CAB you'll either be sent to GSAB (2-3) or AA (4-3). You'll spend your days going out to the range (Ft Stewart) and training with the various 3 ID infantry units. Gunnery can be done there or up at Ft Gordon. It's a great location for some IFR cross country stuff as well. Of course you'll do the usual NTC & JRTC rotations and might get a HAATS trip or a couple other TDY trips also.

Flying is flying. Once you've been to one Army post you've been to them all. Hunter is cool though because of location. Savannah is big enough where it isn't dominated by the usual trash that you see around small towns that revolved around the base. You can actually go downtown and not feel like your still in the Army while off work. Also, you can make contacts there for avenues to other units. You've got 160th there if you should want that route, Georgia NG if you're looking for some stability and a little less BS and if you want to "jump ship" you've got the CG across the ramp. Even have RC-12s if you want FW and follow on orders back to Hunter.

CAB - like a taxi, but it's the army so we capitalize it

SPIES - CIA operatives strung under a helicopter waving their arms around wildly

GSAB - golden state air base in california

AA - America's Army free on PC

IFR - I forrow roads, except during BOLC land nav where the woods are too dense to see the roads unless you're right on it, but that's another story.

NTC - "not too cool" phrase typically used by the senior WOs in reference to WOJG actions

HAATS - baseball cap with an extra "a" because half the army is illiterate

TDY - short for "Today"

NG - new guinea, it's a country somewhere someplace

BS - baloney

CG - color guard if you get sick of flying awesome helicopters and just want to wave flags

FW - c'mon, this is a helicopter forum; we don't talk about that here

Seriously though, it'll start to make sense soon.

Korea is a great first term assignment. You will fly your ass off, make PC, track, and even make AMC if you stay a few years...

Oh yeah, they're big on organized PT at Hunter (Mon-Fri) and the traffic is horrendous driving in for it. Not sure if that's an important consideration or not.

Some places leave PT up to the pilots, some do it 3 days a week and others do it everyday.

Ugh, organized PT. Which places leave it up to the pilots? Not a major consideration at all but it's part of the picture.

Good call on an acronym page. Hmm.

Well Rucker is the only place I know of. That and deployments. Really a lot depends on what commander is there at any given time.

The wife and I are seriously considering Korea after FS. What type of housing is available? Are dogs allowed? How are accompanied tours structured? 2-3 years?

On and Off post housing is common. Yes, dogs are allowed. You have to get command sponsored to bring the family, which makes for a two year tour. You can then extend to 3 if you want.
