Heading for Torrance

Recommended Posts

I'll be leaving for the Robinson factory Sunday afternoon for the safety course. Got my car and hotel room across the street. What I'm looking forward to most is an auto to the ground in a 22. Also, I'll be able to carry a passenger after I complete the course. Should be an interesting week.

Louis Zamperini just passed away last week. That's some busy airspace out there.

I'm NOT looking forward to being in that airspace. At least it's only an hour out of three and a half days.

Low g recovery ending with a full down to Long Beach container yard was a blast! Enjoy every minute of it. Your instructor will handle the radio calls for you.

I was hoping that would be the case (radio / navigation).

Low G recovery!? How long ago did you go there?

I was there November of 2007. Instructors name was Brian I do believe. First he scared me half to death, then showed me how to recover. Very intense.

I was there in 2011. We did a lot of cool stuff, but no low g recovery, I didn't think they were allowed to do that anymore? I'm not sure i'd want to it'd probably scare the sh*t out of me!

Bring paper and pens with you! You will be given a ton of info, especially on the maintenance side of things that you were probably never shown in your training.

I hope you get to do a couple of full downs, but that depends on whether you draw a factory ship or a new ship. Factory ship then yeah probably a couple of full downs. The low G recovery is only simulated - (instructor rolls to the right then a practice recovery by coming aft cyclic before correcting the roll). All in all a fun time. Enjoy!

PS...if you get a chance, go fly after hours with Simon. It will be well worth your money. Advanced Flight is the name of his company. Very knowledgeable and informative. He is usually booked so call ahead.

Is there just one safety course for all three aircraft, or do they split it up and conduct a different class for each? I know you choose which model you do your flight in.

The 22 & 44 class are together, the 66 is separate for about a day and a half.

The low g was the real deal....initiated climb with a push over. We went through it three times so I know what NOT to do, and also how to recover. AFT cyclic first!!

This was a high time pilot who flew better than anyone I'd ever been with before or since. This maneuver may not be shown anymore, but this instructor was shown this by T-Dog himself. It made me realize that your first instinct to put it left cyclic was not the answer, but aft cyclic to reload. Maybe this is not done due to liability reasons, but I know I'm a better pilot for having been shown what to do just in case.....

During the course they relate stories of pilots killing themselves demonstrating it which is why its no longer allowed. Safely notice 11 was issued before 2007 so your instructor was a bad little boy! :)

I think this is the first time I've looked forward to flying to L.A.
