cryesis
I've seen a few topics about military to civilian transition but I'm curious about leaving the civilian pilot world to enter military aviation. Has anyone here made the jump?
akscott60
Sure, quite a few of us have. I started flying fixed wing in 1998, joined in 2010. So its fun to fly fixed wing and rotary. Your previous flight time will help.
cryesis
Let me rephrase civilian, as in 1000+ hours already established in a turbine position. Doesn't seem like its all that common on an occurance. How many hours did you have when you made the leap?
akscott60
Hours? Well, I was a Commercial Multi Instrument rated CFII before I joined. I had about 700-750 hours before. Friends of mine joined with 1500+ hours heli. Some had 2500+ in jets. Any and all experience will help. Is it common to have as much time as you? No.
cryesis
What was the transition like for them going from single pilot operations to the military way of doing things?
akscott60
Its different. But the mission set is so much more complex. Especially if you go guns. I like having a crew of 4-5 to be honest. Its a warplane. When I want to fly alone, I just jump in a C172. Haha
Lindsey
Just realize it's nothing at all like civilian flying. You won't touch an aircraft for over a year once you join. What are your reasons for considering the switch?
