Flying Pig Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 (edited) My son is a HS senior and wants to apply for WOC. Hes 17 (18 in Aug 2016). No college, no flight training. He wants to apply while he's in HS. Let me point out that we both know it's beyond a long shot.... But who cares. Let the Army tell him "No" is his idea. He also wants to look into TACP or SWCC if WOC doesn't happen. He just placed 15th in the S. FL region swim championships. So physically he has the aptitude. Anyway, for my question. The recruiter tells him it's not even allowed to apply. He needs a Bachelors degree for a civilian applicant -OR- an AA/AS and a 3yr enlistment commitment. So at this point the recruiter is saying he's not even qualified to do a packet. I definitely will research with him, but figured I'd have a good answer here in minutes! http://www.usarec.army.mil/hq/warrant/prerequ/woft.shtml Obviously.... It mentions none of this here. And even said HS seniors can apply. Sounds like the recruiter may be confusing OCS with WOCS. But we only said "warrant officer" about 100x. Edited November 12, 2015 by Flying Pig Quote
Lindsey Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 That recruiter is bs. Find another one. Now. 2 Quote
Velocity173 Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 I recall there were at least 2 HS grads accepted on the last board??? So yeah it's definitely possible. Odds aren't going to be in his favor but nothing to lose by applying. If anything on the second board if he should reapply, it shows determination. Took me two looks before getting in...with no degree. Quote
Flying Pig Posted November 12, 2015 Author Posted November 12, 2015 Copy that. He came home pretty discouraged. I told him hold on.... "trust but verify" Yes... i stole Reagans line I told him if this is what you want, then you ABSOLUTELY must be responsible for yourself, your own research and your own decisions. Dont look back in 5 years and find out someone gave you bad info and you failed to verify it because its ultimately YOUR fault. So..... yeah.... Dads not happy. The Navy recruiter told him only officers flew in the Army so he needed his bachelors to apply. Yeah, Navy.... but please.... everyone knows about army warrant officer pilots. Quote
CharyouTree Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 but please.... everyone knows about army warrant officer pilots. Honestly, not really... 2 Quote
Brian101193 Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 Honestly, not really... I didn't know this program existed until about 2 years ago, and I'd been looking into flying in the military since high school. Quote

I'm in the Tampa area and could probably direct you towards my recruiter. Quote
PhrogGuy Posted November 12, 2015 Posted November 12, 2015 As is usually the case, recruiter is not quite right. Quote

The recruiters will get a "will grad" letter and use that in place of a diploma until he graduates. But I agree with everyone else and suggest you find another recruiter that is more knowledgeable about this program. Quote
Flying Pig Posted November 20, 2015 Author Posted November 20, 2015 (edited) Had a long talk with the recruiter last night who said he needed a bachelors and be 21yrs old and immediately started in with "the best path to flight school is to actually come in on active duty as an 11B. You'll find the majority of the attack helicopter pilots all came from the infantry because they already know the tactics". (Long pause..... Slight smile from the recruiter..... Cricket chirps under a desk...." This is a completely different recruiter than the first one he talked to. So then the boss comes out who is an E8. She repeats the same line. So I whip out my WOFT applicant checklist and ask, "Can you show me where I'm missing the bachelors and age requirements because it says 18 and a HS diploma". The boss says it was a recent change that came down, but nobody can find that "change". But....... In the end, a brand new recruiter E5 walks in and they ask him what he thinks. He says, "nope, HS diploma and 18 you don't need any college." And just like that.... The entire atmosphere changed. The irritating part is that they knew we we're coming in to talk about WO, they couldn't be bothered to do basic research and then pop off with "11B is a direct path to flight school after 24 months on active duty." We are getting there. He'll have his ASVAB scores Monday and see where he stands on step 1. Edited November 20, 2015 by Flying Pig Quote
Yamer Posted November 20, 2015 Posted November 20, 2015 I'm really glad people have this website. Good job pig, that is just dumb on their part. Quote
gw263 Posted November 20, 2015 Posted November 20, 2015 I currently have a primary student (IERW) that is high school to flight school. Recruiter is either ignorant or intentionally deceptive (imagine that). 1 Quote

Joe_P148 Posted November 20, 2015 Posted November 20, 2015 If you don't mind, could you post the recruiters information? I think this issue should be addressed. I't urkes me to hear about recruiters doing this crap. Quote
stearmann4 Posted November 20, 2015 Posted November 20, 2015 I've personally called a couple recruiters who were distributing blatantly bad information. It gets cleared up pretty quickly with some WO education. Mike- 2 Quote
