I just completed a class 1 flight physical at Rucker, and it is going to be sent off to be stamped approved. When will I need to have another physical, and what is the difference between a class 1 and 2?

I believe class 1 is to qualify you for flight, class 2 is to keep you qualified to fly, correct me if I'm wrong please.

Luofynerd is correct. Class 1 is to initially qualify you for flight and class 2 is for those already qualified to fly(and a few others).

Are there any differences between the class 1 and 2 when it comes to standards? I'm just worried I will get through WOCS and something will disqualify me when I'm doing my class 2 before flight school.

You will do another class 1 after WOCS, prior to IERW.

 

The one I did before going to SERE was a class 2. I think you will only do one class 1 you're whole career. Class 2 every year after that. As far as standards, the class 2 was WAY faster and didn't include nearly as much. If you can pass a class 1 no problem, you will pass your class 2

Not every Class 2 is that short, I assure you. If it's time for a long version or if you have a high BP reading or get your eyes dilated it pretty much feels like a Class 1 all over.

Class 1 = In-depth and super clinical

Class 2 = Anything bother you? No? Ok, here is your upslip. I will have one of the medics help you with your wheelchair and don't forget you have physical therapy tomorrow at 0945.

I had this one flight doc who had me do the stool sample test for blood one year. If there's anything weirder than crapping in a cup and smearing it on a test card I don't know what it is, then keeping that crap covered card so you can take it back to the lab *repeat this 3 days in a row for maximum weirdness*. Ahh the things we do to keep that $840 a month in ACIP coming in.

I don't know... I think the version of the guaiac test where the doctor puts a finger inside you is a bit weirder.

Is the rectal exam just to rule out prostate cancer? Or is asymptomatic prostate enlargement a disqualifying condition as well?

 

I can't remember the reg, but there's something out there that tells you everything they're checking for. (I think, beyond just the APLs). I'm not sure what the point is, though.

 

I've only had it once, and it turned into a guaiac, as well. Any time after (and before, to be honest...) that it came up, "any issues? Ok, good." I think if they can get away with not doing it, they'd rather not as well.

Wouldn't prostate enlargement make for some bladder control/function problems? If you can't control and fully evacuate your bladder when flying you're in for a rough career.

I assume that's why they just ask, like CharyouTree said, instead of probing with a digit. I'm guessing that as long as you aren't having any urination problems, then it doesn't matter if you have an enlarged prostate. If that's the case, I wonder why that infamous doc at Rucker insists on conducting the exam?

 

You're right about having a rough career if you have bladder control problems. I imagine none of the other pilots or ground crew would appreciate someone pissing all over the seats...

I would suspect that leads back to "if they don't have to" (or feel they have to). I'd already had one before I got to Rucker, on my 3rd flight physical. Previous to that, I got "you're 22? Nevermind...) and all since have been "any issues?"

 

I also know my PA at Rucker very well. I keep asking, and she keeps saying I don't need it...

How long does it take to get a flight physical completed and have it ready for a packet? I'm applying from the civilian side and have my physical part 1 this Thursday with a follow up in two weeks. Is that enough time to make a February 22 submission?

The flight physical will take a good minute. Once you finish your phase 2 follow-up, the doc will send it off to Ft. Rucker to get stamped by the flight surgeon - this is the part that you have to wait a while. I actually got mine back within 72 hours of it being sent off. Not sure what the average time is. I believe it is anywhere between 2-4 weeks.
