SIFT tips and tricks?

I am currently active duty Navy, and about to take my SIFT exam next month. I wanted to reach out and see if any one had some tips or tricks of the trade when it comes with studying for it. Especially hidden figures, helicopter knowledge, and mechanical section. Thanks and have a good day!

It's a pretty straight forward test. I bombed the hidden figures, but there isn't really a way to practice. Try squinting i guess. For the mechanical and math I used a kaplan asvab study guide, but others are probably just as good. Do NOT use the SIFT study guide or whatever it is on Amazon. That book sucks. FAA helicopter manual for helicopter knowledge I studied the first 6 chapters very well and was quite over studied for that section. It's a free pdf online. I would recommend looking up general airspace knowledge a bit as well.

 

Do really well on the math and it will do well for you. As long as you study a little bit every other day you should be fine. There are no tricks really and it's not a cram test. You should just be trying to warm up your brain over a month or so.

I found the SIFT study guide by Accepted Inc. to be very helpful (just make sure you get the latest version). Read the first 3 chapters of the FAA guide and watch the below video and its series to learn about rotary wing aerodynamics etc: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WdEWzqsfeHM. KNOW YOUR ARMY HELICOPTERS (UH = Utility, AH = Attack etc...)! For the hidden figures and such you should practice. Get the accepted book and the Barron's and Peterson's study guides that have extra SIFT practice tests. Get a timer and practice going at a pace where you are able to get a shot at each question. If you don't do this several times you may enter the test without an accurate sense of how long you should linger on a question. Experience increases confidence, and on these fast sections the higher your confidence the higher the score.

 

I found the math in the Accepted book to be adequate for the SIFT, Barron's and Peterson's are much tougher than the SIFT on the math (at least the ones I studied.)

 

Its not a hard test, but if you don't prepare then expect an average score. I did the above and got a 67.

 

Look for more info here on VR, there are several SIFT threads and TONS of great info from many people who took it and did well. Several folks have written lengthy reviews on their study habits and how it paid off.

I took the SIFT yesterday and most of the pointers you'll find throughout VR are pretty spot on. I used the guides by Barrons and Accepted along with Principles of Helicopter Flight and the online FAA manual. There's a link somewhere on VR to YouTube videos of a lecture series on helicopter aerodynamics that I'd definitely recommend as well.

 

I struggled with the hidden figures in every practice test I took and got off to a slow start during the exam. I went in with the mindset that I'd make an educated guess after staring at a problem for 10-15 seconds. I managed to answer 41/50 and had quite a few guesses.

 

I spent a lot of time learning functional knowledge regarding helicopters but glossed over the flight maneuvers. I had to guess on 3 or 4 in the Army Aviation section as a result. Most of the other questions were covered in the guides, videos, and manual.

 

The math section, IMO, was way above what the guides suggested. For example, my third or fourth question was "A rectangular box with 'x' dimensions has a cylinder inside that touches all six sides. What is the ratio of air to solid inside the box". I spent more time than I expected using the scratch paper.

 

The mechanical comprehension section was easier than I expected. I went in expecting to solve Bernoulli's equation and calculate force vectors but it was mostly simple machines like you'll find in the guides. I was actually pretty worried during the test that I was getting the questions wrong because I didn't feel like the difficulty was increasing.

 

I didn't practice the reading comprehension sections at all and I wouldn't recommend that. I assumed I read enough to not need to study it but the passages were long and many of the answers were mostly correct so I was bouncing back and forth a lot and the timer had me sweating.

 

Simple drawings are simple but I didn't find anywhere to practice using a computer. I only made it through 93/100.

 

The drawings in spatial apperception are similar but not the same as the guides and I found it more difficult (plane was more difficult to discern, attitudes were more extreme, 45 degree approaches, etc).

 

I studied about 10-15 hours per week for two months and scored a 70.

I can't necessarily speak to what sets you apart. Really only on of the people on the selection board can answer that accurately. But I can tell you this much. I was selected in January on the civilian side with a SIFT score of 54, and no flight time.

Hidden figures f*cked my life. I'm not even sure I got a single one right lmao. It was like the most impossible shape to recognize, and it didn't change the whole time I was taking the test, like on the practice test they have easy ones like a house. Mine was a house that was engulfed in flames with a giant dragon running out of the garage. sh*t was insane. The figure it was hidden in looked like a thousand lines to me. I felt stupid.

I took the AFAST a while back and scored a 134 and took the SIFT right when it was put out and scored 74. That being said, study the ARCO book and focus on the AFAST and ASTB test guides, do all the practice exams in the book and you will be good to go on the SIFT.

 

Remember everyone, there was a disclosure agreement with the test. It is not rocket science, just study and the basic mental preparedness will get you a passing score.

I haven't taken a math class, or used algebra for over a decade. I watched a whole mess of algebra one and two classes and reviews on youtube.

 

Also, Google. And coffee.

Just took the SIFT yesterday, this forum helped me out while I was preparing so I thought I would add some info to the pile and pay it forward:

 

I bought the SIFT study guide by Accepted INC. And while it has a ton of typos, it's gives a great description of each part of the test. For some, this test is one that maybe you don't need to study for, but I believe you definitely need to practice so you know what to expect. It's important to read through the helicopter flying handbook as well.

 

I also used Quizlet, Kaplan, and watched some videos on youtube to help understand certain concepts.

 

Simple Drawings: Pretty straight forward, the computer was actually a little slow so I got a couple of extra seconds between each question. Just need to do the practice tests for this section and you'll be fine.

 

Hidden Figures: This part actually kicked my ass. I crushed all the practice tests I had and thought this section was gonna be easy....then I ran out of time with questions left unanswered. Try to find as many versions to practice as possible.

 

Army Aviation: Easy. Do your part and study the Helicopter Handbook, military helicopters, night ops, and lingo.

 

Spacial Apperception: Process of elimination will do you wonders on this part. Don't let yourself get cocky and answer quickly because it "looks" right. It's easy to make a stupid mistake on this part, take your time and eliminate the wrong answers every time.

 

Reading:Reading is just a matter of you not zoning out or falling asleep as you read a very boring passage. It's straight forward and not too tricky, just take advantage of your break and make sure you're awake for this part.

 

Math: I haven't done math in a decade...and even then I didn't really do much of it in college sooo I was worried about this part. Kaplan has a great online service to knock all the rust off. I had to make a lot of educated guesses on this part. This section is adaptive, so focus on giving every question your best effort.

 

Mechanical : This was not as hard as I thought it was going to be. The study guide and Quizlet did a great job of preparing me for this part. If you're mechanically weak, do your part and study up, it's not something that common knowledge will get you by since it's an adaptive section of the test.

 

Hope this helps, I was able to score a 69 with a little less than a month of "studying" and mainly just doing practice tests.
